World’s Largest Shiva Lingam Receives Grand Welcome at Bihar Border
In a moment of profound spiritual significance, the world’s largest Shiva lingam—weighing a staggering 210 metric tons—crossed into Bihar and reached Gopalganj over the weekend. The colossal monolith, transported all the way from Tamil Nadu, was greeted with extraordinary fanfare as it arrived at the Balathari checkpoint on the Uttar Pradesh–Bihar border.
Thousands of devotees gathered at the border crossing, eager to witness this historic milestone. The atmosphere was electric with devotion as worshippers showered the lingam with flower petals and raised thunderous chants of “Har Har Mahadev,” turning the checkpoint into a temporary temple ground.
Minister Ashok Choudhary Performs Ritual Worship
Bihar’s Rural Works Minister, Dr. Ashok Choudhary, along with the Secretary of the Bihar State Religious Trust Board, Sayan Kunal, made a special visit to Gopalganj for the occasion. Before proceeding to the border, Minister Choudhary first sought blessings at the revered Thawe Durga Temple, a famous Shakti Peeth in the region.
Upon reaching Balathari, he conducted a formal puja and aarti of the 210-metric-ton Shiva lingam, marking the first official religious ceremony for the sacred object since its arrival in the state.
A Marvel of Faith and Engineering
This extraordinary Shiva lingam is not merely a symbol of religious devotion—it is also a testament to human craftsmanship and engineering. Standing 33 feet tall and carved from a single block of granite, it was sculpted over a period of approximately ten years in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.

The lingam is destined for the under-construction Virat Ramayan Mandir in Kaithwalia, located in Bihar’s East Champaran district. Once completed, this temple is expected to become one of the world’s most significant spiritual landmarks. Minister Choudhary expressed immense pride in the development, noting that the temple, being built under the guidance of Secretary Sayan Kunal, will put Bihar on the global map as a premier center of spirituality.
After the brief halt at the border for rituals, the lingam resumed its journey toward the temple site.
Installation Scheduled for January 17
According to Minister Choudhary, the formal installation of the Shiva lingam within the temple complex is scheduled for January 17. Following the installation, the process of pran-pratishtha—the ritual consecration that infuses the idol with divine presence—will commence.
Massive Security Arrangements
Given the enormous public interest, the district administration deployed extensive security measures along the entire route and at the event venue. Thousands of devotees participated in the puja ceremony at the Balathari border, their devotional chants echoing across the landscape. Officials ensured that the event proceeded smoothly without any disruptions, managing the large crowds with careful planning.
