Celebrate Hanuman Janmotsav with Simple Homemade Offerings

Hanuman Janmotsav is a deeply auspicious occasion for devotees of Lord Hanuman, also known as Bajrangbali. On this sacred day, offering his favorite foods is believed to bring immense blessings and fulfill heartfelt wishes. Traditional offerings include boondi ladoos, besan ladoos, roasted chickpeas with jaggery, fresh fruits, tulsi leaves, and sindoor. These items are not just symbolic; they are cherished by the deity and can be easily prepared at home. Homemade prasad holds a special significance, as it is made with devotion and pure ingredients. Below are simple recipes to create these beloved offerings.

Boondi Ladoo: A Favorite Sweet for Bajrangbali

Boondi ladoo is one of the most popular sweets offered to Lord Hanuman. Making them at home ensures freshness and a taste that often surpasses store-bought versions. Follow this straightforward recipe to prepare a batch of these golden, melt-in-the-mouth treats.

Ingredients for Boondi Ladoo

  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Cardamom powder (to taste)
  • Ghee or oil for frying
  • Water as needed

Step-by-Step Preparation

Start by preparing the batter. Mix the gram flour with enough water to create a smooth, flowing consistency. It should not be too thick or too thin—similar to pancake batter. Set this aside.

Heat ghee or oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Hold a perforated ladle (jharani) over the hot oil and pour a small amount of batter onto it. Gently tap the ladle so that droplets of batter fall into the oil. Fry these tiny drops until they are golden and crisp. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat until all the batter is used.

In a separate pan, prepare the sugar syrup. Combine the sugar with three-quarters cup of water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. Continue cooking until the syrup reaches a sticky, one-thread consistency. To test, take a drop between your thumb and forefinger; it should feel sticky and form a thin thread when the fingers are pulled apart. Stir in the cardamom powder.

Once the syrup is ready, gently add the fried boondi to it. Mix well, ensuring every piece is coated. Allow the mixture to cool slightly until it is warm but comfortable to handle. Then, shape small portions into round ladoos using your palms. Let the ladoos rest for a while so they set properly before offering them as prasad.

Simple Chickpea and Jaggery Offering

Another beloved offering for Lord Hanuman is a combination of roasted chickpeas (chana) and jaggery (gur). This simple, no-cook prasad is easy to prepare and deeply traditional.

How to Prepare

Take a cup of roasted chickpeas and a cup of crumbled or chopped jaggery. Mix them together in a clean bowl. You can also add a few pieces of fresh coconut or banana for variety. Offer this mixture on a clean plate along with fresh fruits. This humble yet heartfelt offering is said to please Bajrangbali immensely.

Tips for a Meaningful Offering

When preparing any prasad, cleanliness and devotion are key. Use fresh ingredients and maintain a calm, focused mind while cooking. Offer the prepared items on a clean plate, along with a tulsi leaf and a pinch of sindoor if available. Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa or simple prayers while preparing and offering the food enhances the spiritual experience. Remember, the sincerity behind the offering matters more than elaborate preparation.
