Protecting Your Child’s Eyes and Skin During Holi Festivities

Holi is a festival of joy, colour, and water play that children eagerly await each year. However, amidst the laughter and splashing, there are hidden risks that parents must address. Every Holi season brings a spike in cases of skin allergies, eye irritation, slips and falls, and dehydration among children. Paediatricians note that most holiday-related minor accidents stem from a lack of preparation and can be easily avoided with simple precautions.

Children’s skin is far more sensitive than that of adults. Synthetic colours often contain harsh chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions or contact dermatitis. Eye injuries also become more common during this time, making vigilance essential. With a little foresight, the right choice of colours, and proper preparation, you can ensure your child enjoys a safe and memorable Holi. This guide offers practical steps to keep the fun going without compromising on safety.

What Colours Are Safe for Children?

Always choose herbal or natural colours. Research indicates that inexpensive, low-quality colours frequently contain harmful substances that can damage both skin and eyes. Look for labels that clearly state “non-toxic” or list natural ingredients. Avoid buying loose, unbranded colours sold in open markets. Before using any new colour, perform a patch test on a small area of your child’s skin to check for any adverse reaction.

How to Prepare Your Child’s Skin Before Playing

Apply a generous layer of coconut or almond oil to your child’s skin about 20 to 30 minutes before they start playing with colours. Follow this with a moisturiser and sunscreen on the face and hands. The oil creates a protective barrier that prevents colours from penetrating deeply into the skin, making them easier to wash off later and reducing the risk of irritation.

What Should Children Wear?

Dress your child in full-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers made of lightweight cotton fabric. The more skin that is covered, the lower the chance of direct contact with colours. Choose light-coloured clothing to reduce heat absorption. Additionally, ensure they wear footwear with good grip to prevent slipping on wet surfaces.

How to Protect Eyes and Ears

Teach your child never to forcefully apply colour on anyone’s face, especially near the eyes. If colour accidentally gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with clean, running water. If irritation persists, consult a doctor without delay. Wearing protective goggles is a smart and effective way to shield the eyes from accidental splashes.

Is Playing With Water Safe?

Excessive water play can lead to slips, colds, coughs, and even dehydration. Discourage children from running on wet floors. Always use clean water for playing. Keep an eye on how much time they spend in wet conditions, and ensure they take breaks to dry off and stay hydrated.

What to Do If a Child Swallows Colour

Young children often put their hands in their mouths while playing. If you suspect your child has swallowed colour, clean their mouth immediately and give them plenty of clean water to drink. If they experience vomiting, discomfort, or any unusual symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

Post-Holi Skin and Hair Care

Bathe your child with lukewarm water using a mild baby shampoo. Avoid scrubbing harshly. Apply a gentle moisturiser after the bath to restore the skin’s natural barrier. Do not wash the skin repeatedly with soap on the same day, as this can strip away essential oils and worsen dryness.

Bonus Safety Checklist

  • Never let children play outdoors unsupervised.
  • Keep them away from exposed electrical wires and open pits or drains.
  • Teach them not to throw colours on pets or animals.
  • Ensure they wash their hands thoroughly before eating or drinking anything.
