Home Minister Amit Shah Reviews Cybercrime Helpline 1930, Pushes for AI and Multilingual Upgrades

With cybercrime and online fraud surging across the country, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah recently conducted a detailed review of the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930. During this assessment meeting, he directed officials to strengthen the helpline and its associated systems by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and expanding multilingual support. The goal is to make it significantly easier for ordinary citizens to file complaints and ensure faster resolution of cases.

Emphasis on AI and Multilingual Capabilities

Shah noted that the number of cybercrime-related incidents is steadily climbing. To address this, he stressed the urgent need to leverage modern technology for a more effective and rapid complaint resolution process. He specifically instructed authorities to develop AI-driven solutions and to provide assistance in multiple Indian languages, thereby removing language barriers for complainants across the nation.

Directives for Better Coordination with States

The Home Minister also urged agencies to collaborate closely with state governments. He emphasized that every complaint received on the helpline must be followed through to its logical conclusion. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of resolving issues related to frozen bank accounts, a common source of distress for victims of financial cyber fraud.

The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal: A Brief Overview

To bolster the reporting and action against cybercrimes nationwide, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) launched the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) on August 30, 2019.

Initially, the portal operated on a limited scope, accepting complaints only about child pornography and obscene content related to rape or gang rape. Over time, its functionality was expanded, transforming it into a comprehensive national platform for reporting all types of cybercrimes. The portal was officially dedicated to the nation by the Union Home Minister on January 20, 2020.

A Unified System to Combat Financial Cyber Fraud

Recognizing the sharp rise in digital financial fraud, the government has also established a shared, integrated mechanism. This system brings together law enforcement agencies, banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), financial institutions, payment wallet companies, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Their collaborative effort aims to enable swift action in cases of cyber fraud, significantly reducing the time it takes to trace and recover stolen funds.

How to Report a Cybercrime Immediately

For reporting financial cyber fraud, a specialized system called the “Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System” has been developed. This platform allows citizens to instantly file complaints regarding fraud involving digital banking, credit cards, debit cards, UPI, and other digital payment methods.

If you fall victim to any form of cyber fraud, you can immediately contact the National Cybercrime Helpline by dialing 1930. Alternatively, you can file an online complaint directly through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
