The Body’s Built-In Cooling System: How It Fights Extreme Heat

As April draws to a close, the Delhi-NCR region is experiencing a dangerous surge in temperatures. Scorching sun from early morning, blistering winds at midday, and elevated nighttime heat are making life increasingly difficult. This isn’t just about discomfort—heatwaves have evolved into a serious public health crisis. Medical experts warn that children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing conditions face the highest risks and must take extra precautions.

The intensity of heat seen this April has specialists concerned that May and June could push temperatures several degrees higher, leading to a sharp rise in dehydration, dizziness, vomiting, weakness, and life-threatening heatstroke. To stay safe, everyone needs to pay careful attention to hydration, diet, clothing choices, and daily routines.

How the Body Naturally Regulates Temperature

The Role of Sweating

Our bodies are remarkably equipped to handle heat up to a certain point. Dr. Shailesh Nigam, an intensive care specialist, explains that the primary cooling mechanism is sweating. When sweat evaporates from the skin, it draws heat away from the body, helping maintain a stable internal temperature.

However, this system has limits. On humid days, sweat doesn’t evaporate efficiently, making it much harder for the body to cool down. When the body cannot expel excess heat effectively, that heat begins to accumulate internally, leading to a condition called hyperthermia.

When the Balance Breaks

Once the ambient temperature rises significantly above normal, the body’s natural equilibrium starts to fail. The cooling mechanism becomes overwhelmed, and internal heat builds up faster than it can be released. This is the tipping point where heat-related illnesses begin.

Why Heatstroke Is a Growing Danger

The 40-Degree Threshold

In northern India, temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) signal serious health risks. Dr. Nigam notes that the situation in Delhi-NCR is particularly severe due to the urban heat island effect. Concrete buildings, asphalt roads, and vehicle emissions trap heat, making the perceived temperature even higher than what thermometers show. This environment dramatically increases the likelihood of heatstroke.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

Heatstroke is a medical emergency where the body’s core temperature rises rapidly, and the cooling system shuts down entirely. It can be fatal if not treated promptly. Many people dismiss early symptoms as simple fatigue or feeling overheated, but this neglect can turn deadly.

  • Severe headache and high body temperature
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Stopping of sweating (hot, dry skin)
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Confusion or disorientation

If you or someone nearby experiences these symptoms, do not wait—immediate medical attention is critical.

Expert Advice: Simple Steps to Prevent Heatstroke

Stay Hydrated, Stay Safe

Dr. L. Shyam Singh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at a leading Delhi hospital, emphasizes that preventing dehydration is the single most important step. “To prevent heatstroke, the most crucial thing is to never let your body run low on water. Keep yourself well-hydrated at all times,” he advises.

Timing and Clothing Matter

If you must go outside between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.—the peak heat hours—always drink water before stepping out. Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton. This allows air to circulate and helps sweat evaporate more effectively.

Listen to Your Body

If you feel feverish, restless, dizzy, or generally unwell, stop what you are doing immediately. Rest in a cool or shaded area and take active steps to lower your body temperature—such as applying a cold cloth or taking a cool shower. Ignoring these signals can allow heat exhaustion to progress into full-blown heatstroke.

What Hospitals Are Doing to Handle Heatstroke Cases

Emergency rooms are prepared for the seasonal surge. Dr. Singh explains that hospitals have dedicated facilities for severe cases. Patients with critical heatstroke are moved to specialized stroke units where immersion cooling and other necessary treatments are administered. Last year alone, approximately 75 patients with heat-related emergencies were treated at his hospital.

Practical Tips for Beating the Heat

  • Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks—they can dehydrate you
  • Eat light, water-rich foods like fruits and salads
  • Take cool showers or baths throughout the day
  • Use fans, air conditioning, or cool compresses to lower body temperature
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a few minutes
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives who may be more vulnerable

Understanding the Difference: Heat Exhaustion vs. Heatstroke

Heat exhaustion is a milder condition that can be managed with rest and hydration. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold and clammy skin, nausea, and fainting. If not addressed, it can escalate to heatstroke, which is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical intervention.

Heatstroke is characterized by a core body temperature above 104°F (40°C), altered mental state, and hot, red, dry skin. This is not something to treat at home—call for emergency help without delay.
