The ongoing placement season at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has reached a historic milestone. A final-year Computer Science Engineering student, Edward Nathan Varghese, has secured a remarkable job offer worth ₹2.5 crore, marking the highest compensation package ever recorded at the institute since its establishment in 2008.
This exceptional offer comes from Optiver, a globally renowned trading firm headquartered in the Netherlands. Varghese is slated to join the company as a software engineer in July, stepping into a role that reflects both his technical expertise and the growing recognition of talent emerging from India’s premier engineering institutions.
From Summer Internship to Pre-Placement Offer
Varghese’s journey to this landmark offer began with a two-month summer internship at Optiver. His performance during this period earned him a pre-placement offer (PPO), a pathway that allowed him to bypass the traditional campus recruitment process. According to reports, he outperformed another intern during the selection phase to clinch the position. Interestingly, Optiver was the only company Varghese interviewed with during the entire placement season, a testament to his focused approach and the strength of his candidacy.
When asked about the factors behind his success, Varghese credits the prestige of the IIT brand, the flexibility of the institute’s curriculum, and his early and sustained emphasis on coding and competitive programming from his very first year of engineering.
An Impressive Academic and Competitive Track Record
A native of Hyderabad, Varghese completed his schooling from Class 7 through Class 12 in Bengaluru. His academic journey is studded with outstanding achievements. In 2022, he secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 1100 in the JEE Main examination and followed it up with an All India Rank of 558 in JEE Advanced. More recently, in the 2025 Common Admission Test (CAT), he scored an impressive 99.96 percentile, translating to an All India Rank of 120.
These numbers highlight not just his aptitude for engineering but also his versatility across different domains of study, a quality that likely set him apart during the rigorous selection process at Optiver.
Leadership Beyond Academics
Varghese’s contributions at IIT Hyderabad extend well beyond the classroom. According to his professional profile, he served as the Overall Head of the Office of Career Services at the institute. In this leadership role, he managed a team of eight student managers and approximately 250 coordinators, overseeing the smooth execution of placement and internship activities. Prior to this, he spent about 11 months as an Internship Cell Coordinator, gaining valuable experience in managing student-facing processes.
His interests, as he describes them, span a wide spectrum including algorithms, competitive programming, finance, and management. He expresses a keen desire to deepen his understanding of these areas and connect with like-minded individuals who share his passion.
Attributing Success to Preparation and a Bit of Luck
Reflecting on his achievement, Varghese humbly notes that luck played a role in receiving the PPO. However, he also emphasizes the deliberate preparation that underpinned his success. He was confident that the IIT brand would attract companies to campus, insulating students to some extent from the broader job market fluctuations. Additionally, his deep involvement in competitive programming from the first year of his engineering degree, which saw him rank among the top 100 in the country, proved instrumental in cracking the interview. He also acknowledges the institute’s flexible curriculum, which allowed him to explore a diverse range of courses and build a well-rounded skill set.
Breaking Previous Records at IIT Hyderabad
This ₹2.5 crore offer shatters all previous compensation records at IIT Hyderabad. The institute’s earlier highest package stood at ₹1.1 crore in 2017. In more recent years, the maximum package was ₹90 lakh during the 2023-24 cycle and ₹66 lakh in 2024-25. Varghese’s offer not only surpasses these figures by a significant margin but also sets a new benchmark for future placement seasons, underscoring the rising value of top-tier technical talent in the global market.
