IIT Kanpur Mandates Mental Health Screening for All New Students

Following two tragic suicides on campus within a single month, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has introduced a mandatory mental health screening process for all incoming undergraduate and postgraduate students. The initiative, which takes effect during the first week of a student’s arrival, is designed to identify psychological distress early and ensure timely intervention.

Immediate Action After Campus Tragedies

The decision comes in the wake of two devastating incidents that have shaken the institute community. On Tuesday, Ramaswamy Ishwaram, a 25-year-old PhD scholar, allegedly died after falling from the sixth floor of a residential building on campus. Just weeks earlier, on December 29, Jay Singh Meena, a 26-year-old final-year BTech student in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, was found dead in his hostel room.

These back-to-back losses prompted the administration to accelerate its mental health initiatives and implement stronger preventive measures. The mandatory screening is the first step in a broader strategy to safeguard student wellbeing.

A Structured Support System

Students who show signs of significant psychological distress during the screening will receive immediate support from trained counselors. If needed, psychiatrists will step in to provide more specialized care. This tiered approach ensures that students get the right level of help from the very beginning of their academic journey.

The institute has significantly expanded its mental health infrastructure. A psychiatrist now heads the health center, supported by three additional psychiatrists. The counseling team has also grown to include ten trained psychologists, all equipped to handle severe mental health challenges.

Building a More Aware Campus Culture

Beyond the screening process, IIT Kanpur is working to create a more empathetic and informed campus environment. Regular awareness workshops are being conducted for faculty, students, and staff. The training extends to security personnel, doctors, paramedics, library staff, hall managers, mess teams, and housekeeping workers. The goal is simple: anyone who interacts with students should be able to recognize signs of distress and respond appropriately.

This comprehensive approach reflects the institute’s understanding that mental health support cannot be limited to medical professionals alone. Every member of the campus community has a role to play in creating a safety net for those struggling.

Round-the-Clock Emergency Assistance

A 24×7 emergency support system has been established in collaboration with the health and wellness centers. This ensures that students facing a crisis can access help at any hour, without delay. The round-the-clock availability is crucial for situations where immediate intervention can make a significant difference.

Encouraging Open Conversations and Peer Support

Throughout the academic year, the institute organizes events and workshops designed to normalize discussions around mental health. Activities such as run fests, cultural celebrations, and World Mental Health Day observances create informal opportunities for students to connect and engage with one another.

Peer mentoring has also been formalized for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Senior students actively support newcomers, helping them navigate the transition to campus life. This mentorship model reduces feelings of isolation and provides an accessible first point of contact for students who may be hesitant to seek professional help.

A Commitment to Holistic Development

The institute emphasizes that academic excellence and mental wellbeing go hand in hand. By prioritizing mental health, IIT Kanpur aims to support the complete development of its students, not just their academic achievements. The expanded mental health center and the increased availability of trained professionals reflect a long-term commitment to student welfare.

Students are actively encouraged to take care of their mental health and seek help whenever needed. The administration hopes that these measures will create an environment where seeking support is viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness.

The mandatory screening is just one component of a multi-layered approach. With trained professionals on hand, structured peer support, and a campus-wide awareness program, IIT Kanpur is taking concrete steps to prevent future tragedies and ensure that every student has access to the care they need.
