IIT Madras Develops Indigenous Facility to Recycle 100 Tonnes of E-Waste Annually

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have unveiled an indigenous pilot plant designed to process approximately 100 tonnes of electronic waste every year. The facility, developed entirely with domestic expertise, represents a significant step forward in India’s efforts to manage the growing challenge of e-waste while recovering valuable materials from discarded devices.

The newly established plant is specifically engineered to handle uncoated printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are among the most hazardous and metal-rich components of electronic waste. These boards contain substantial amounts of copper, lead, and tin — metals that, if not managed properly, can leach into soil and groundwater, posing serious long-term environmental and public health risks.

Innovative Metal Recovery Technology

The technology behind this pilot plant introduces a novel method for extracting precious metals from obsolete and discarded electronic equipment. What sets this approach apart is its zero-discharge design, meaning the process generates no waste that could contaminate soil, water, or air. This makes it an environmentally responsible alternative to conventional e-waste processing methods.

The system operates on a single-acid process, offering a scalable and efficient model for managing large volumes of e-waste. With India generating an estimated 5 million metric tonnes of electronic waste annually, this innovation could play a pivotal role in both environmental conservation and resource recovery. The technology emerged from an internally funded research initiative at IIT Madras, showcasing the institute’s commitment to translating academic inquiry into practical solutions.

Alignment with National Priorities

Professor S. Pushpavanam, who holds the YBG Verma Chair Professorship in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras, highlighted the broader significance of the project. He noted that as India’s e-waste challenge intensifies, this pilot plant offers a model that can be scaled up for clean metal extraction. The work aligns with the country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, the principles of a circular economy, and the goal of securing critical minerals.

Professor Pushpavanam also emphasized that this project exemplifies how academic research can evolve into tangible technology development. The journey from laboratory concept to functional pilot plant demonstrates the potential for Indian institutions to lead in solving pressing environmental issues.

Key Features of the Pilot Plant

Several distinctive characteristics set this facility apart from existing technologies in the market:

  • A single-acid process that enables complete zero-discharge operation, eliminating pollution concerns
  • Fabrication entirely by Indian companies, based on research conducted at IIT Madras

The facility has been installed at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) campus in Tiruchirappalli, a strategic location that supports industrial collaboration and future scalability.

As electronic consumption continues to rise across India, the need for robust e-waste management infrastructure becomes increasingly urgent. This pilot plant not only addresses that need but does so in a way that prioritizes environmental safety and resource efficiency.
