IITs to Overhaul MTech Programs with Focus on Specialization and Industry Alignment
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to introduce significant reforms to their MTech curriculum, placing a stronger emphasis on specialization while prioritizing industry relevance and research. The IIT Council has approved proposals to develop dual MTech tracks and specialized courses designed to better align with contemporary workforce demands.
Addressing Declining Enrollment in MTech Programs
Discussions held during the IIT Council meeting in August 2025, whose minutes have now been formally approved, highlighted a troubling trend: a growing number of BTech graduates are choosing not to pursue MTech degrees. The primary reasons cited include limited job prospects and the absence of meaningful industry internships within the current MTech framework. Additionally, many students feel that existing specialization options do not offer compelling career advantages over a BTech alone.
This shift in student preference has resulted in a steady decline in MTech admissions across multiple IIT campuses. During the academic year 2020-21, as many as 3,229 MTech seats remained vacant. The following year, 2021-22, saw 3,083 unfilled positions, underscoring the urgency of curriculum reform.
Impact on Doctoral Programs
The ripple effect of dwindling MTech enrollment has also been felt in PhD programs. In 2020, there were 1,779 vacant PhD seats, and by 2021 that number had climbed to 1,852. This trend points to a broader disengagement with advanced research-oriented education at the IITs, prompting leadership to rethink how postgraduate programs are structured and marketed to students.
