AI Takes Center Stage at India AI Impact Summit 2026

The second day of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, brought together policymakers, academic leaders, and industry experts to chart the future of education in an AI-driven world. The discussions underscored a shared vision: artificial intelligence is no longer an optional enhancement but a fundamental pillar of India’s educational transformation.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Education and Skill Development (Independent Charge) Jayant Chaudhary, and IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti were among the prominent voices shaping the conversation on how AI can redefine learning, teaching, and institutional governance.

AI-Enabled Learning: A Core Government Priority

Addressing the gathering, Pradhan emphasized that equipping the younger generation with AI-enabled education is a primary responsibility of the government. He noted that the summit, convened under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has injected fresh energy and enthusiasm among students, educators, and domain experts participating in large numbers.

The minister highlighted that the summit’s focus revolves around two interconnected pillars: integrating AI into education and teaching AI as a subject in itself. According to Pradhan, leveraging AI can empower both students and teachers by bridging India’s traditional knowledge systems with global learning frameworks. Additionally, AI holds the potential to make school and college administration more efficient and responsive to contemporary needs.

Pradhan also pointed out that the world now views India as a rapidly adopting AI nation. He expressed confidence that AI will play a pivotal role in positioning India as a global knowledge powerhouse, contributing directly to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision of a developed nation.

Policy and Institutional Reforms Take Shape

A key session titled “Ministry of Education: Pushing the Frontier of AI in India” explored transformative possibilities at policy, technological, and institutional levels. The Ministry of Education has developed a comprehensive roadmap for integrating AI across school education, higher education, and technical training. This blueprint emerged from extensive consultations involving academia, industry stakeholders, and startups working at the intersection of education and technology.

Chaudhary elaborated on the profound and wide-ranging impact AI is expected to have on education. He stressed the need for focused capacity-building initiatives for teachers and a reimagining of academic structures to accommodate AI-enabled methodologies. Discussions spanned the entire educational continuum, from foundational learning to skill development, research, and preparing students for global leadership roles.

The minister also drew attention to the education ministry and Skill India pavilions at the summit, which showcased indigenous AI solutions already being deployed at the grassroots level across the country. These demonstrations illustrated practical applications of AI in addressing real-world educational challenges.

IIT Madras to Lead Center of Excellence

In a significant announcement, Chaudhary revealed that IIT Madras has been entrusted with establishing a Center of Excellence dedicated to AI and education. This institution will conduct in-depth studies on how AI influences learning outcomes, assess the nation’s current readiness, and recommend future reforms to maximize the benefits of AI in education.

The center is expected to serve as a think tank and research hub, generating data-driven insights that can inform national education policy and implementation strategies.

Four Transformative Levels of AI in Education

IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti provided a detailed perspective on how AI can revolutionize education across four distinct levels, each addressing a different stakeholder group within the ecosystem.

For students: AI-powered tools enable learners to ask questions without hesitation and receive immediate responses, fostering deeper understanding and encouraging curiosity-driven exploration. This instant feedback loop can significantly enhance comprehension and retention.

For parents: AI can analyze a child’s interests and aptitudes, identifying talents in areas such as music, sports, photography, or drawing. This insight supports more informed career guidance and helps families nurture their children’s unique strengths.

For teachers: AI systems can pinpoint specific subjects or concepts where individual students struggle, enabling educators to tailor their instruction and provide targeted support. This personalized approach to teaching can dramatically improve learning outcomes.

For policymakers: AI-driven analytics offer a granular view of educational performance at the village, district, and state levels. This data empowers decision-makers to craft evidence-based policies that address regional disparities and allocate resources more effectively.

Building on a Decade of Digital Foundation

The push for AI-enabled education builds on a decade of sustained effort by the Ministry of Education. Over the past ten years, the ministry has strengthened the digital infrastructure through online platforms, progressive policies, institutional reforms, and capacity-building programs. Following the most recent national budget, the Center of Excellence for AI for Education was established at IIT Madras, marking a concrete step toward institutionalizing AI in the education sector.

Additionally, the recently concluded Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026 emphasized the importance of responsible AI adoption. The Ministry of Education has made it clear that the time for planning has passed; the focus now shifts to large-scale implementation across the country’s vast and diverse educational landscape.

With multiple stakeholders aligned and institutional frameworks taking shape, India appears poised to harness AI’s transformative power to create a more equitable, effective, and future-ready education system. The summit’s outcomes signal a decisive move toward embedding artificial intelligence at the very core of the nation’s learning ecosystem, setting the stage for a new era of educational excellence.
