India’s Semiconductor Mission Marks Four Years of Progress
On the fourth anniversary of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, presented a detailed roadmap for the nation’s ambitions in the global chip industry. He reaffirmed that India is on track to become a major force in semiconductor manufacturing and design, with clear milestones set for the coming decade.
Ten Major Projects Underway, Production Imminent
Vaishnaw revealed that the mission has achieved significant ground-level success over the past four years. Currently, ten large-scale semiconductor projects are under active construction across the country. Among these, four are expected to commence production within this year—a milestone that would mark a substantial leap forward for India’s manufacturing capabilities.
Beyond large-scale fabrication, the startup ecosystem is also thriving. Approximately 24 Indian startups have successfully designed their own semiconductor chips, showcasing the country’s growing expertise in chip architecture and innovation. To ensure a steady pipeline of talent, 315 academic institutions are now offering specialized training programs in chip design, preparing students for careers in this high-tech sector.
Focus on Indigenous Technology and Intellectual Property
The minister emphasized that India’s vision extends far beyond simple assembly or packaging. Through the ISM, the country aims to achieve self-reliance by developing its own intellectual property (IP) in six critical technology domains. These include computing, radio frequency (RF), networking, power management, sensors, and memory. By building proprietary IP in these areas, India intends to reduce dependence on foreign technology and strengthen its position in the global supply chain.
Clear Roadmap for 2029 and 2035
Vaishnaw outlined a phased strategy with ambitious yet realistic targets. “By 2029, India will emerge as a major player in the semiconductor industry,” he stated. “By 2035, the country will be counted among the world’s most important semiconductor nations.” This timeline reflects a deliberate effort to transform India from a consumer of chips into a key producer and designer, capable of influencing global electronics and chip manufacturing dynamics.
The mission’s progress is not just about building factories; it is about creating an entire ecosystem. From training thousands of engineers to fostering homegrown startups and developing proprietary technologies, India is laying the groundwork for long-term leadership. As the world increasingly relies on semiconductors for everything from smartphones to electric vehicles and defense systems, India’s push into this sector could reshape global supply chains and reduce vulnerabilities for the country.
With construction ongoing, production lines set to go live, and a new generation of chip designers emerging from universities, the India Semiconductor Mission is steadily turning ambition into reality. The next few years will be critical in determining whether India can meet its 2029 and 2035 goals, but the early signs are promising.
