A Made-in-India AI Smartglass Gets a High-Profile Try-On

At the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, a homegrown startup took the spotlight by offering a sneak peek at its forthcoming AI-powered smartglasses. The moment gained extra significance when Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally tried on the device, prompting the company to confirm that the product was entirely designed and developed within India.

Co-founder Pratyush Kumar of Sarvam AI released a teaser video showcasing the smartglasses, named Sarvam Kaze. He explained that the device is built to integrate artificial intelligence directly into everyday life, moving beyond the confines of phone or laptop screens. A photograph shared from the summit showed PM Modi wearing the glasses, with the company noting that he was the first person to test them.

What Is Sarvam Kaze?

Sarvam Kaze is an AI-powered wearable designed and built by the Indian startup Sarvam AI. Its core mission is to pull artificial intelligence out of mobile displays and embed it into real-world, hands-free experiences. Until now, most people have interacted with AI through smartphones or computers, but this device aims to place that capability directly in front of the user’s eyes.

According to Pratyush Kumar, the glasses are not merely an accessory to wear. They can see, hear, and even comprehend their surroundings. Key features include:

  • A built-in camera that captures whatever the user is looking at in real time.
  • Voice and ambient sound recognition that allows the device to respond instantly.
  • A platform that lets users create custom features tailored to their own needs.

Key Specifications at a Glance

Feature Description
Design Stylish frames with a compact look reminiscent of premium smart eyewear.
Camera High-quality lens for real-time visual analysis.
Processor Powered by Sarvam’s own advanced AI models.
Connectivity Voice command support and synchronization with smart devices.

India’s First AI Hardware Milestone

Sarvam asserts that the Kaze is a fully indigenous product, from design to development. If it launches on schedule in May 2026, it will rank among the earliest AI hardware devices to emerge from the country. While India has produced numerous AI software platforms and applications, stepping into the hardware category marks a significant shift for the domestic tech ecosystem.

Can It Compete With Global Giants?

Currently, the global smartglasses market is largely dominated by Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration, which sold millions of units last year. There is also speculation that Apple may be working on its own smart eyewear. Against this backdrop, Sarvam Kaze’s Indian design and manufacturing could position it as an affordable and well-suited alternative for local consumers, potentially giving international players a run for their money.

Why Sarvam AI Is Making Headlines

In recent months, Sarvam AI has drawn attention for its large language models, which in some areas have been compared to tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Now, the company is expanding beyond software into a full hardware ecosystem, signaling a broader ambition to control both the intelligence and the device that delivers it.

What This Means for Users

If the device succeeds, users can expect a voice assistant that operates directly in their field of vision. Live translation and object recognition could become seamless tasks. Content creation and augmented reality experiences may become faster and more intuitive. Additionally, reliance on mobile phones could decrease as more functions shift to the wearable.

However, important questions remain. Data privacy, battery life, camera permissions, and real-time processing capabilities will all need to be addressed for the product to gain widespread trust and adoption.
