Indian Educator Rubal Nagi Wins Global Teacher Prize 2026

Rubal Nagi, an Indian educator, has been named the winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2026, a prestigious international honor that celebrates exceptional contributions to the teaching profession. The announcement was made during the World Government Summit held in Dubai, where Nagi also received a prize award of one million dollars.

The award, now in its tenth edition, was presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. The ceremony recognized Nagi’s pioneering work in transforming neglected walls into interactive learning spaces that teach reading, writing, arithmetic, and also raise awareness about public health and environmental issues.

A Decade of Dedication: Connecting Children to Education

Over the past twenty years, Nagi has used art as a medium to bring more than one million children into the fold of formal education. Her efforts stood out among more than 5,000 nominations received from 139 countries, making her selection a remarkable achievement on a global scale.

Through the Rubal Nagi Art Foundation, she has established more than 800 education centers across India. These centers create safe and inspiring environments for children in over 100 underserved communities and villages. Many of these children had dropped out of school or never had the opportunity to enroll. The centers provide academic support, psychosocial assistance, and creative activities designed to help children re-enter the education system and stay engaged in learning.

The Living Walls of Learning Approach

At the heart of Nagi’s methodology is her signature initiative, the “Living Walls of Learning.” This approach repurposes abandoned walls into open-air classrooms, turning everyday public spaces into vibrant educational hubs. These walls are painted with lessons and interactive content that make learning accessible to children who might not have regular access to formal schooling.

Nagi travels extensively across India, guiding teachers and working directly with students. She has trained more than 600 educators and volunteers, creating a scalable model that addresses the educational, social, and economic needs of children. Her programs have led to a reduction of over 50% in school dropout rates, significantly improving retention and long-term educational outcomes for thousands of young learners.

Plans for the Prize Money

Looking ahead, Nagi has outlined a clear vision for the prize funds. She intends to establish a vocational institute that will offer free training in professional skills and digital literacy. The goal is to create life-changing opportunities for millions of underprivileged youth, equipping them with tools to secure better livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society.

Recognition on a Global Stage

The Global Teacher Prize is presented in collaboration with UNESCO and the Varkey Foundation, with GEMS Education serving as the organizing partner. The award is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished honors in the field of education, acknowledging teachers who go above and beyond to transform the lives of their students and communities.

Nagi’s recognition highlights the power of creative, community-driven approaches to education. Her work demonstrates that meaningful change is possible even in resource-constrained settings, and that art, when used thoughtfully, can be a powerful catalyst for learning and social progress.

Her journey from classrooms in India to a global stage serves as an inspiration for educators everywhere, proving that dedication, innovation, and a deep commitment to children’s welfare can yield extraordinary results.
