Why Your Induction Cooktop Could Become a Kitchen Hazard

With LPG cylinder prices soaring past ₹3,500 in many parts of the country, Indian households are increasingly turning to induction cooktops as a cost-effective and convenient alternative. The shift has been dramatic, with sales climbing rapidly as families look for ways to manage their monthly kitchen expenses. But while these electric stoves promise efficiency and ease, they also come with their own set of risks that many users overlook.

Using an induction cooktop might seem straightforward, but overlooking a few fundamental precautions can lead to serious accidents or permanent damage to the appliance. Understanding how to operate it safely is not just about protecting your investment — it is about protecting your home and your family.

Choose the Right Cookware

Not every pot or pan belongs on an induction cooktop. Aluminum, copper, and glass vessels are incompatible with the electromagnetic technology that powers these stoves. When you use the wrong cookware, the appliance has to work harder, putting unnecessary strain on its internal components. Always opt for induction-friendly cookware made from stainless steel or iron with a magnetic base. This simple choice ensures even heating and prevents your device from overheating or malfunctioning.

Keep Your Hands Dry at All Times

Induction cooktops run on electricity, and water is a dangerous combination with any electrical appliance. Touching the controls or the surface with wet hands significantly increases the risk of electric shock. Make it a habit to dry your hands thoroughly before operating the cooktop. This rule applies even when you are in a hurry during a busy cooking session — a moment of carelessness can lead to a painful and avoidable accident.

Inspect Your Electrical Connections

A stable and properly rated electrical connection is non-negotiable for safe induction cooktop use. Faulty wiring, loose plugs, or overloaded sockets can cause short circuits, sparking, or even fires. Before installing your cooktop, have a qualified electrician check your kitchen’s wiring and ensure the outlet can handle the appliance’s power draw. Avoid using extension cords or multi-plug adapters, as these often lack the capacity for high-wattage devices.

Keep Children at a Safe Distance

The cooking surface of an induction cooktop becomes extremely hot during use and remains hot for some time after it is turned off. Curious children may not recognize the danger and could suffer severe burns if they touch the surface. Position your cooktop in a location that is out of reach of young children, and never leave it unattended when little ones are nearby. Consider using a child lock feature if your model offers one.

Never Heat an Empty Vessel

One of the most common mistakes people make is placing an empty pot or pan on an induction cooktop and switching it on. Without food or liquid inside, the vessel absorbs heat rapidly, causing both the cookware and the cooktop to overheat. This can warp the pan, damage the ceramic surface, and even trigger a fire hazard. Always ensure there is at least some water, oil, or food in the vessel before turning on the heat.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Induction cooktops have built-in ventilation systems that release heat generated during operation. If you place the cooktop too close to a wall or block the vents with cloth, paper, or other objects, the airflow is restricted. This causes the internal temperature to rise, leading to overheating and potential failure of the electronic components. Leave at least a few inches of space around the cooktop and keep the vents clean and unobstructed at all times.

Induction cooktops offer a modern, affordable way to cook, but they demand respect and attention. By following these straightforward safety measures, you can enjoy the convenience of this technology without putting yourself or your loved ones at risk. Small habits make a big difference when it comes to kitchen safety.
