Why Does Your Mobile Internet Drop During Calls?

It can be incredibly frustrating when you’re in the middle of an important call and need to send a file or look something up online, only to find your mobile data has vanished. This issue is more common than you might think, even in an era of blazing-fast 5G networks. The good news is that the solution is often simpler than you imagine. Let’s explore the real reasons behind this problem and the straightforward fixes you can apply right now.

Technically speaking, older network generations like 2G and 3G could not handle voice calls and data simultaneously. However, modern networks have evolved. If your internet still cuts off the moment a call comes in, the most likely culprit is a disabled feature called VoLTE (Voice over LTE). When VoLTE is turned off, your phone is forced to drop from a 4G signal down to an older 2G or 3G network to handle the call. This switch instantly disconnects your data connection, leaving you without internet until the call ends.

Three Essential Settings to Adjust Immediately

To regain a seamless experience where both calls and data work together, follow these steps. They are designed for both Android and iOS devices, though the exact menu names may vary slightly depending on your phone manufacturer and operating system version.

1. Activate VoLTE or 4G Calling

This is the single most effective fix. Navigate to your phone’s Settings menu, then tap on Mobile Network or SIM Card settings. Select the SIM card you use for data. Look for an option labeled VoLTE, 4G Calling, or Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. Toggle this setting to the On position. Once activated, your phone will remain connected to the 4G network during calls, allowing your internet to stay active without interruption.

2. Verify Your Preferred Network Mode

Sometimes, the network mode is accidentally set to a restrictive option like “3G Only” or “2G Only.” Go back to your Mobile Network settings and find the option for Preferred Network Type or Network Mode. Ensure it is set to 4G/3G/2G (Auto) or 5G/4G/3G/2G (Auto). This automatic mode gives your phone the flexibility to choose the best available network for both calling and data, preventing forced downgrades.

3. Configure Data During Calls (For Dual SIM Users)

If you use two SIM cards, this setting is crucial. In your SIM Card settings, look for an option like Data during calls or Switch data connection during calls. Activate this feature. When enabled, if you receive a call on your primary data SIM, your phone will automatically switch to using the internet connection from your secondary SIM. This ensures you never lose connectivity, even during a voice call on the other line.

Advanced Troubleshooting: APN and Network Reset

If the above adjustments don’t resolve the issue, the problem may lie deeper within your network configuration. A quick reset of your Access Point Name (APN) settings can often clear up data routing errors. To do this, go to your Mobile Network settings, select the SIM card in question, and tap Reset to Default under the APN section. This will restore the original settings provided by your carrier.

As a last resort, you can perform a full Network Settings Reset. This is a powerful tool that clears all network-related configurations, including saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN settings. Navigate to Settings > General Management (or System) > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Use this option only after trying everything else, as you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices afterward.

Check Your SIM Card and Network Operator

Persistent problems after all software tweaks may point to a hardware or carrier issue. A very old SIM card may not fully support modern technologies like VoLTE or 5G. If your SIM is several years old, visit your mobile operator’s store and request a free upgrade to a newer, compatible SIM card. Additionally, ensure you are in an area with strong network signal strength. When the signal is weak, your phone will prioritize maintaining the voice call over preserving your data connection, which can also cause the internet to drop.
