A Generational Tradition Under the Microscope

For generations, Indian households have upheld a time-honored practice: applying kohl, or kajal, to the eyes of newborns and toddlers. Elders often insist that this simple act not only enhances the beauty of a child’s eyes, making them appear larger and more captivating, but also serves as a protective shield against the evil eye. However, as medical science advances, pediatricians and eye care specialists are increasingly urging parents to reconsider this deeply ingrained custom.

Understanding whether kajal is truly beneficial or potentially harmful for delicate infant eyes has never been more critical. A baby’s visual system is still developing, and the tissues surrounding the eyes are exceptionally sensitive. Before adopting any traditional practice, it is wise to separate cultural belief from medical fact.

The Hidden Dangers of Applying Kajal to Babies

According to pediatric experts, applying kajal to infants is far from safe. The primary concern is that a baby’s eyes possess a natural self-cleaning mechanism, and introducing any external substance can disrupt this process, significantly raising the risk of infection.

Risk of Bacterial Infection

The application process itself can be a gateway for germs. Fingers, applicator sticks, or containers may harbor bacteria. When these come into contact with the eye, they can easily cause conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. This condition leads to redness, discharge, and discomfort, requiring medical treatment.

Chemical Irritation and Allergic Reactions

Infant skin and eyes are extremely sensitive. Many commercially available kajal products contain a mixture of ingredients, including oils, waxes, and carbon black. Even natural or homemade versions can trigger reactions. Common symptoms include redness, itching, and a burning sensation. In some cases, prolonged exposure can lead to chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins.

Blocked Tear Ducts

Kajal particles can easily migrate into the corners of the eyes and accumulate. This buildup can obstruct the tiny tear ducts, which are responsible for draining tears. A blocked duct often results in excessive tearing, sticky discharge, and swelling around the eye. This condition can be uncomfortable for the baby and may require a doctor’s intervention to resolve.

Toxic Heavy Metal Exposure

One of the most alarming risks is the potential presence of lead and other heavy metals in certain kajal formulations. Lead is a neurotoxin, and even small amounts can be dangerous for a developing child. Long-term exposure has been linked to developmental delays and learning difficulties. Unfortunately, not all traditional or market-sourced kajal products are tested for purity, making this a hidden but serious hazard.

Expert Guidelines for Infant Eye Care

Medical professionals offer clear and consistent advice regarding newborn eye care. Their recommendations are based on protecting the fragile structure of the eye during its critical growth phase.

  • Avoid all cosmetics: Do not apply any form of kajal, eyeliner, or other cosmetic product to a baby’s eyes. This includes both store-bought and homemade varieties.
  • Use only clean water for cleaning: If you need to clean your baby’s eyes, use a soft, clean cotton ball or cloth dipped in sterile, cooled boiled water. Gently wipe from the inner corner outward, using a fresh swab for each eye.
  • Monitor for signs of trouble: Be alert for symptoms such as persistent tearing, redness, swelling, or a sticky discharge. If any of these appear, consult a pediatrician promptly rather than trying home remedies.
  • Do not self-medicate: Avoid using any eye drops, herbal solutions, or traditional treatments without explicit guidance from a healthcare provider.

Practical Tips for Daily Eye Hygiene

Maintaining your baby’s eye health does not require special products. Simple, consistent habits are far more effective.

  • Gently clean the area around the eyes with a soft, damp cloth during bath time or after feeding.
  • Keep your baby’s environment free from dust, smoke, and strong drafts that can irritate the eyes.
  • Wash your own hands thoroughly before and after touching your baby’s face or eyes.
  • Discourage older siblings or visitors from touching the baby’s face unnecessarily.

Balancing Tradition with Science

It is natural to feel torn between the loving advice of family elders and the cautionary words of modern medicine. Many parents have grown up seeing kajal used without apparent issue. However, the risks—ranging from minor irritation to serious infection or toxin exposure—are well-documented. A baby’s eyes are not miniature adult eyes; they are still maturing and far more vulnerable.

Choosing to forgo kajal is not a rejection of cultural heritage. Rather, it is an informed decision to prioritize a child’s immediate health and long-term well-being. The most beautiful thing you can give your baby is not the illusion of larger eyes, but the gift of healthy, infection-free vision.
