JEE Advanced Set for Major Overhaul: Aptitude Questions and Multiple Exam Slots on the Cards

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is poised for a significant transformation, with the Indian government preparing to revamp its structure. Under the new framework, the exam will not only test students on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) but will also incorporate aptitude-based questions to assess a broader range of skills.

Spearheading this initiative is the Joint Admission Board (JAB). A dedicated committee of experts from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), led by Professor Manindra Agarwal, Director of IIT Kanpur, has been tasked with drafting a comprehensive reform roadmap. The committee is expected to submit its proposals within six months, after which the plan will be rolled out in phases, guided by pilot results and subsequent analysis.

More Opportunities: Multiple Exam Slots Per Year

One of the most significant proposed changes is the frequency of the exam. Currently held once annually, JEE Advanced is likely to be conducted two to three times a year, mirroring the model of JEE Main. This shift aims to offer students greater flexibility and multiple opportunities to secure a seat in the prestigious IITs. The examination could be spread across several days with different time slots, allowing candidates to choose a window that best suits their preparation and convenience.

Redefining the Question Paper: Focus on Aptitude

The introduction of aptitude questions will inevitably alter the composition of the question paper. With a new section dedicated to evaluating logical reasoning, mathematical aptitude, and problem-solving abilities, the number of direct PCM questions is expected to decrease. While coaching centers have traditionally focused heavily on PCM, this change is designed to shift the emphasis towards critical thinking and skill assessment rather than rote memorization of subjects. The goal is to make the rigorous exam slightly more accessible by valuing a candidate’s inherent analytical capabilities alongside their subject knowledge.

The Driving Force: Addressing Student Stress and Coaching Dependency

The impetus for this structural change stems from recommendations within the National Education Policy (NEP) to alleviate the immense pressure associated with high-stakes examinations. JEE Advanced is widely considered one of the most stressful exams for students in the country. The intense competition is fueled by a stark disparity: only about 19,000 seats are available for the 1.5 to 2 lakh aspirants who appear for the exam each year.

This immense pressure often begins at a very young age, with parents enrolling their children in coaching institutes as early as the sixth grade. The dual burden of schoolwork and intensive coaching can lead to severe anxiety and stress among students. In tragic cases, the inability to cope with this pressure has led to extreme outcomes. The planned reforms are a direct response to this crisis, aiming to reduce student anxiety and lessen the over-reliance on the coaching industry by creating a more balanced and skill-oriented evaluation process.
