JNU Administration Issues Strict Warning Against Campus Violence and Vandalism

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has taken a firm stance against any acts of violence or damage to public property within its premises. The university administration released an official circular alerting students that such behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The directive comes in response to several disturbing incidents reported inside and around the university’s residential hostels. According to the administration, these events involved violent conduct and deliberate destruction of public assets, prompting immediate corrective measures.

Students Directed to Follow Institutional Rules

All students residing in university hostels have been explicitly instructed to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations established by both the university and the government. The circular advises students to refrain from participating in any activity that could result in damage or defacement of hostel property.

The administration has made it clear that disciplinary action will be taken against any student found violating these guidelines. Legal proceedings will be initiated under the Public Property Damage Prevention Act of 1984 and the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act of 2007. These laws empower the university to take stringent measures against offenders, ensuring accountability for any harm caused to institutional assets.

Previous Incident of Library Vandalism

This warning follows a significant act of vandalism reported in November of the previous year at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Central Library. Unidentified individuals had uprooted and discarded the face recognition system installed at the library entrance. The damage was estimated to have caused a financial loss of approximately 20 lakh rupees to the university.

This incident highlighted vulnerabilities in campus security and underscored the need for stronger preventive measures. The latest circular appears to be a direct response to such occurrences, signaling the administration’s commitment to safeguarding university infrastructure.

Demands for Improved Road Safety on Campus

In a separate but equally important development, the JNU Students’ Union has raised concerns regarding road safety within the campus. The union has written to the Chief Security Officer highlighting a recent accident near KC Market, where a student sustained serious injuries during nighttime hours.

This incident is not isolated. Three years ago, a student lost their life in a fatal accident caused by reckless speeding on campus roads. The union has stressed that implementing effective safety measures is essential to protect both students and residents who frequently navigate these routes.

Among the specific recommendations put forward by the students’ union are the installation of at least three speed breakers along the stretch between the North Gate and Sabarmati T-Point. The proposed locations include one near the Ganga bus stand, another on the stretch before KC Market, and a third close to the Southapuram turn.

Additionally, the union has called for proper signage to regulate vehicle speeds across the campus. They have proposed that the speed limit should not exceed 30 kilometers per hour, in line with residential area norms. These measures are intended to prevent further tragedies and ensure safer movement for everyone within the university grounds.

The university administration’s latest circular, combined with ongoing discussions about campus safety, reflects a broader effort to maintain discipline and security at JNU. Students are now on notice that destructive behavior will carry serious consequences, while authorities continue to address infrastructure and safety gaps that affect daily campus life.
