Mahashivratri 2026: Date, Auspicious Timings, and Ritual Significance

Mahashivratri holds a deeply sacred place in the Hindu calendar, observed annually on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Phalguna. Devotees mark this occasion with fasting, night-long vigils, and elaborate worship of Lord Shiva. The rituals of pouring water over the Shiva Linga (jalabhishek) and performing Rudrabhishek are central to the celebrations. It is believed that sincere devotion on this day brings peace, prosperity, and relief from planetary afflictions. Here is everything you need to know about Mahashivratri 2026, including the exact date, favourable timings, and spiritual importance.

Mahashivratri 2026: Exact Date

According to the Drik Panchang, the Chaturdashi tithi (fourteenth lunar day) of the Krishna Paksha in Phalguna month begins on Sunday, 15 February 2026, at 5:04 PM and concludes on Monday, 16 February 2026, at 5:34 PM. Observing the fast and performing the worship on Sunday, 15 February, is considered the most appropriate for devotees.

Auspicious Timings for Mahashivratri Puja

The day offers several favourable windows for performing rituals, each carrying its own significance.

  • Brahma Muhurat: 5:17 AM to 6:08 AM – Bathing and offering water to the Shiva Linga during this period is considered highly meritorious.
  • Abhijit Muhurat: 12:13 PM to 12:58 PM – This midday window is also regarded as favourable for worship.
  • Nishita Kaal (Midnight): 12:09 AM to 1:01 AM (on 16 February) – This is considered the most auspicious time for Shiva puja.

Four Prahar (Quarter) Timings for Night Worship

  • First Prahar: 6:11 PM to 9:23 PM
  • Second Prahar: 9:23 PM to 12:35 AM (16 February)
  • Third Prahar: 12:35 AM to 3:47 AM (16 February)
  • Fourth Prahar: 3:47 AM to 6:59 AM (16 February)

Each of these four segments has its own unique spiritual benefit, and performing puja during any one of them is believed to bring divine blessings.

Best Time for Jalabhishek (Water Offering)

Devotees perform jalabhishek throughout the day, but scriptures particularly recommend the early morning hours and the Pradosh Kaal (sunset period) as the most auspicious. Offering water, milk, honey, and bilva leaves to the Shiva Linga during these times is said to cleanse past karmas and invite divine grace. The four prahar pujas also hold distinct significance, with each quarter representing a different aspect of spiritual purification.

Spiritual Significance of Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri is not merely a ritualistic festival; it is a profound spiritual occasion. Observing a fast, performing abhishek, chanting Shiva mantras, and meditating on the Lord are believed to calm the mind, dissolve worldly troubles, and bring inner peace. For devotees, this night represents the victory of light over darkness and consciousness over ignorance. It is said that a sincere heart, pure intentions, and unwavering devotion on this day move Lord Shiva to shower his blessings and remove obstacles from the devotee’s path.
