Indian Student Numbers in the US Decline by Nearly 7%
New data presented in the Indian Parliament reveals a notable dip in the number of Indian students pursuing education in the United States. As of February 2026, the total count stands at 352,644, marking a decrease of roughly 6.9% compared to the 378,787 students recorded in February 2025. The figures, shared by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), are drawn from the US Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
What’s Behind the Drop?
The decline comes amid stricter enforcement of US visa policies and heightened scrutiny of applicants. In June 2025, US authorities introduced fresh guidelines that reframed the visa as a privilege rather than a right. These new rules emphasize national security considerations for every application, including a thorough review of applicants’ online presence. Under the updated framework, all visa seekers are now required to keep their social media profiles public so that authorities can assess their digital footprint as part of the vetting process.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh addressed the issue in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, confirming that these tightened measures have had a direct impact on enrolment numbers. He noted that the stricter visa regime is a significant factor contributing to the reduced intake of Indian students.
Post-Visa Surveillance and Enforcement
The new system does not end with visa approval. Monitoring continues even after students arrive in the US, and any breach of visa conditions can lead to revocation of status and potential deportation. Authorities are particularly vigilant about the following violations:
- Dropping out of academic programs without prior notification
- Minor legal infractions, including traffic violations
- Serious offences such as driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI)
- Overstaying the duration permitted by the visa
- Engaging in activities that contradict the terms of the visa
Which Courses Are Indian Students Pursuing?
Indian students in the US are enrolled across a wide spectrum of academic levels. The distribution includes those studying at the school level, spanning primary and secondary education, as well as high school programmes. Additionally, a number of students are engaged in vocational training, language courses, and flight schools. At the higher education level, enrolments cover undergraduate (bachelor’s) degrees, postgraduate (master’s) programmes, and doctoral studies, along with other specialised courses.
