Meghalaya Introduces Community-Led Skill Learning for Classes 6–10

In a significant move to reshape school education, the Meghalaya government has approved the rollout of Community Integrated Skill Learning (CISL) for students from Class 6 to Class 10. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma following a cabinet meeting, also opens the door for private candidates to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, offering a fresh opportunity for those who could not complete their secondary education earlier.

A Structured Approach to Practical Education

The newly approved CISL framework will function as a structured curriculum, integrated with the existing Health and Physical Education subject. Until now, this subject has largely been theoretical, relying heavily on textbook content. The new model aims to shift the focus from rote learning to hands-on experience, enabling students to acquire skills that are relevant to their daily lives and future livelihoods.

Under this initiative, students will not only learn from books but also from their immediate surroundings. They will be encouraged to observe, learn, and practice skills rooted in their family traditions and community practices, and later showcase these skills in a school setting.

Learning From Family and Community

The initiative is designed to be flexible and student-centric. Learners will be guided to select one or more skills based on their personal interests and family background. For instance, a student whose parents are involved in farming may choose to develop agricultural skills. Similarly, traditional crafts and occupations practiced within the local community will become part of the learning process, allowing students to engage with and demonstrate these crafts as part of their academic journey.

This approach not only enriches the educational experience but also strengthens the bond between schools, families, and local communities. By bringing indigenous knowledge and local professions into the classroom, the government hopes to instil a deeper appreciation for traditional livelihoods among younger generations.

No Pressure to Choose a Career Path

Chief Minister Sangma clarified that the programme is not intended to push students toward any specific profession. Instead, its purpose is to help children understand the value of local livelihoods, traditional work, and practical knowledge. The initiative is expected to nurture essential life skills, boost student confidence, and encourage greater family involvement in education.

By exposing students to a variety of skills and trades, the government aims to create a more holistic learning environment that prepares young people not just for exams, but for life beyond school.

Private Candidates Allowed in SSLC Exams

In another key decision, the cabinet approved the participation of private candidates in the SSLC examination conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education. This move is particularly beneficial for individuals who, for various reasons, were unable to pass the Class 10 exam earlier or had to leave school after Class 8.

The government is simplifying and streamlining the application and examination process to ensure wider participation. The objective is to make secondary education more accessible and inclusive, giving more people the chance to complete their schooling and improve their qualifications.

Meghalaya Day Awards 2026 Announced

During the same cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister also revealed the names of the recipients for the Meghalaya Day Awards 2026. These awards recognise outstanding contributions in various fields:

  • U Tirot Sing Award (Art & Literature): Dr. Kinpham Singh Nongkynrih
  • Pa Togan Sangma Award (Social Service): Father Benoy Joseph
  • U Kiang Nangbah Award (Sports): Riohlang Dhar

In addition to these honours, the cabinet approved amendments to the Border Area Development Service rules, granted service extensions to certain senior officials, and greenlit proposals related to the Republic Day 2026 celebrations. The government confirmed that preparations for the Republic Day events are already underway and progressing at full pace.

These decisions reflect a broader vision to modernise education while preserving cultural roots, and to create pathways for lifelong learning and community engagement across Meghalaya.
