Meta Disables Over 150,000 Accounts in Coordinated Southeast Asia Scam Crackdown

In a sweeping international operation targeting organized online fraud, Meta has removed more than 150,000 suspicious accounts. The action, focused on scam networks operating across Southeast Asia, involved collaboration with law enforcement agencies from multiple countries. Authorities in Thailand also arrested 21 individuals as part of this joint effort.

Global Agencies Unite Against Cyber Fraud

The operation was spearheaded by the Royal Thai Police’s Anti-Cyber Scam Center, with significant support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice’s Scam Center Strike Force. Meta’s investigative teams acted on real-time intelligence shared by these agencies to identify and dismantle fraudulent networks.

Beyond the United States and Thailand, participating agencies included the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, as well as authorities from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia. This broad coalition reflects the increasingly cross-border nature of digital scams and the need for unified responses.

New Safety Features on Facebook and WhatsApp

Alongside the account takedowns, Meta introduced several new tools designed to help users recognize and avoid potential scams. On Facebook, a new feature will flag profiles that may contain misleading information. For instance, if a profile claims to be located in one country but is actually operated from another, the system will alert the user. It will also highlight whether an account is very new or has no mutual friends, giving users the option to block or report such profiles.

WhatsApp has received an upgrade aimed at preventing account hijacking. The platform will now detect attempts by scammers to link a user’s phone number to a different device. When such activity is identified, a pop-up warning will appear on the screen, advising that the action could be fraudulent.

Enhanced Scam Detection in Messenger

Facebook Messenger has also seen improvements in scam detection. Users can now forward suspicious messages—such as unsolicited job offers—to an AI-powered review system. This allows the platform to analyze potentially harmful content more quickly and take appropriate action.

  • Over 150,000 accounts disabled in coordinated international operation
  • 21 arrests made in Thailand as part of the crackdown
  • New Facebook tool detects mismatched location and profile claims
  • WhatsApp pop-up warns users of unauthorized device linking attempts
  • Messenger now offers AI review for suspicious messages like fake job offers

These measures represent a significant step in Meta’s ongoing efforts to combat online fraud and protect users from increasingly sophisticated scam tactics. The company continues to work closely with global law enforcement to identify and disrupt organized criminal networks operating on its platforms.
