Executive Council Approves Name Change for Bhopal’s Barkatullah University
The Executive Council of Barkatullah University in Bhopal has officially approved a proposal to rename the institution as Vagdevi Bhojpal University. University officials confirmed the decision on Thursday, stating that the proposal will now move forward for further procedural approvals.
Registrar Dr. S.B. Singh explained that the renaming initiative is intended to honor the historical and cultural legacy of the region, particularly the intellectual contributions of Raja Bhoj, the celebrated ruler of the Parmar dynasty. The move reflects a broader effort to reconnect the institution with the area’s deep-rooted heritage.
Council Member Raises Objections
However, the decision did not pass without opposition. Dr. Tahira Abbasi, a member of the Executive Council, voiced her dissent during the meeting. She argued that the current name pays tribute to Maulana Barkatullah, a prominent freedom fighter whose legacy deserves preservation. Rather than renaming an existing institution, she suggested that a separate university could be established to carry the new name.
Context of Renaming in Madhya Pradesh
This is not an isolated incident in the state. Madhya Pradesh has witnessed several similar renamings in recent years. Notable examples include Habibganj Railway Station being renamed Rani Kamlapati Station, Islam Nagar becoming Jagdishpur, Nasrullaganj being changed to Bheruda, and Hoshangabad being renamed Narmadapuram.
BJP leader Ashish Agrawal defended the decision, stating that the government acts in accordance with public sentiment and that this move is a way to respect the culture and heritage of the region.
Congress Raises Concerns
The opposition has also weighed in on the matter. Mukesh Nayak, head of the Madhya Pradesh Congress media department, questioned the timing and priorities behind the proposal. He argued that the university should instead focus on resolving academic and administrative challenges. Nayak pointed out that several courses have faced disrupted academic sessions and that systemic issues continue to plague the institution.
University Background and Scope
Established in 1970 as Bhopal University, the institution was later named after Maulana Barkatullah, a noted freedom fighter from the region. The university campus spans approximately 400 acres along the Bhopal-Hoshangabad road and serves a wide geographical area.
