NCERT Issues Public Recall for Class 8 Social Science Textbook

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formally issued a public recall for the Class 8 social science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Part 2.” The organization has requested all individuals and institutions holding copies of this book to return them immediately. This development follows an escalation of controversy that led to the Supreme Court imposing a complete ban on the publication.

Return Procedures and Digital Content Removal

In an official media advisory, NCERT has directed that all physical copies of the book be submitted without delay to either the Department of Education in Social Sciences (DESS) or the Publication Division at its headquarters located on Sri Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi. Additionally, the council has instructed that any content related to the disputed chapter titled “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society” be promptly removed from social media platforms and other digital channels. The organization has reiterated that the book stands officially withdrawn from circulation.

Supreme Court’s Firm Directive

On February 26, the Supreme Court imposed a sweeping prohibition on the publication, printing, sale, and digital distribution of the textbook. The court directed the central government to enforce the order immediately and halt both physical and online dissemination of the material.

The preceding day, February 25, the court had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued show-cause notices to the NCERT director and the secretary of the school education department, questioning why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.

Government Response and Compliance Measures

The central government informed the court that 32 copies of the book had already been sold and were in the process of being retrieved. Following this, the Ministry of Education instructed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to cease digital distribution and submit an action report by February 27. This report is intended to support the filing of a compliance affidavit before the court.

Accountability and Next Steps

The court has additionally called for action against those involved in the preparation of the book. The Union Education Minister has assured that accountability will be established and appropriate measures will be taken in response to the situation.

This recall marks a significant step in ensuring that educational materials align with legal and constitutional standards, and the swift action underscores the seriousness with which the matter is being treated at the highest levels of the judiciary and government.
