NEET PG 2025 Qualifying Criteria Eased: New Opportunities for Medical Aspirants

In a significant development for medical postgraduate aspirants, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced a substantial reduction in the NEET PG 2025 qualifying cut-off scores. This decision, implemented following directives from the central government, brings welcome relief to thousands of doctors who had previously been unable to secure admission into MD, MS, and diploma programmes.

The revised eligibility benchmarks now permit a considerably larger pool of candidates to participate in the upcoming third round of counselling and the stray vacancy round. This strategic move is designed to address the persistent issue of unfilled postgraduate medical seats across the country and ensure that specialised healthcare positions are adequately staffed.

Revised Qualifying Percentiles and Scores

The amended criteria represent a dramatic shift from the original standards outlined in the NEET PG 2025 information bulletin. Candidates from various categories will now find it significantly easier to meet the minimum eligibility requirements, opening doors that were previously closed.

  • General and EWS Categories: The qualifying percentile has been lowered from the 50th percentile to the 7th percentile. This translates to a reduced qualifying score of 103 out of 800, a substantial drop from the earlier required 276.
  • General PWD Category: For candidates with disabilities in the general category, the minimum qualifying percentile has been reduced from the 45th percentile to the 5th percentile. The corresponding score requirement has been adjusted to 90, down from the previous 255.
  • SC, ST, and OBC Categories (including PWD): In the most generous adjustment, the qualifying percentile for these categories has been slashed from the 40th percentile to the 0th percentile. This effectively means that any candidate who appeared for the examination is now eligible, with the qualifying score set at -40.

These revised cut-offs are expected to have a profound impact on the counselling process, allowing a vast number of previously ineligible candidates to now compete for available seats.

Rationale Behind the Cut-Off Reduction

The decision to lower the qualifying marks stems from a pressing need to fill the numerous clinical and non-clinical postgraduate seats that remain vacant even after the first two rounds of counselling. Each year, a significant number of positions in medical colleges across the nation go unfilled, representing a missed opportunity to enhance the healthcare system with more qualified specialists.

By broadening the eligibility criteria, the government and regulatory bodies aim to maximise seat utilisation and ensure that no postgraduate training opportunity is wasted. Furthermore, the revision process had contributed to a delay in the third round of counselling. With the new cut-offs now officially released, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is expected to promptly announce the schedule for the next phase of the allocation process.

What Candidates Need to Do Next

With the lowered cut-offs now in effect, the counselling process is poised to regain momentum. Candidates who were previously unable to meet the minimum qualifying standards are now encouraged to take advantage of this new opportunity. They are advised to visit the official MCC website to complete a fresh registration for the upcoming counselling rounds.

In addition to the cut-off reduction, the MCC has also extended the deadline for candidates to resign from seats allocated in the first and second rounds. This new deadline is set for 15th January. This extension is intended to facilitate the return of resigned seats to the main pool, making them available for allocation in the subsequent round. This measure is expected to streamline the process and provide more options for candidates participating in the third round.

The combination of a lower qualifying bar and an extended resignation window is set to create a more dynamic and inclusive counselling cycle. It is anticipated that the third round of counselling will commence shortly, offering a fresh start for many medical professionals seeking to advance their careers through postgraduate specialisation. This proactive approach by the authorities underscores their commitment to strengthening the medical education framework and addressing the shortage of specialist doctors in the country.
