New Reed Snake Species Discovered in Mizoram Expands India’s Reptile Diversity
A collaborative team of scientists from Mizoram University, alongside researchers from Russia, Germany, and Vietnam, has identified a previously unknown species of reed snake in the northeastern Indian state. The finding, published in the international scientific journal Zootaxa, corrects longstanding taxonomic misclassifications and adds a new entry to India’s growing list of reptilian fauna.
Decades-Old Samples Finally Classified
According to Professor H.T. Lalremsanga, head of the research team and faculty member in the Department of Zoology at Mizoram University, the newly identified species has been named Calamaria mizoramensis, in honor of the state where it was found. The conclusion was reached after an exhaustive examination of physical characteristics combined with detailed DNA analysis.
The first specimens of this snake were collected from Mizoram back in 2008. For years, they were assumed to belong to a widespread Southeast Asian species. However, the new investigation revealed that the Mizoram population represents a distinct lineage unique to the region.
The research team studied samples gathered over the past decade from forested areas surrounding Aizawl, Reiek, Sihphir, and Sauleng, as well as parts of Mamit and Kolasib districts. Genetic comparisons showed that the Mizoram reed snake differs from its closest relatives by more than 15 percent in its genetic makeup—a margin substantial enough to warrant recognition as a separate species.
A Harmless, Secretive Snake
Currently, the species has only been confirmed within Mizoram’s borders, though researchers do not rule out its presence in neighboring regions. The study notes that while no evidence of the snake has been found elsewhere in India, it may inhabit adjacent states such as Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam. Further investigation is also needed to determine whether the species extends into Bangladesh’s Chittagong region.
The Calamaria genus comprises 69 recognized species worldwide, most of which are small, elusive, and poorly studied. The newly described snake from Mizoram is non-venomous and poses no threat to humans. These creatures are primarily nocturnal and semi-fossorial, meaning they spend much of their time burrowing underground or beneath leaf litter.
They thrive in moist, hilly forest environments and have been observed at elevations ranging from 670 to 1,295 meters above sea level. Interestingly, some specimens were found in close proximity to human settlements, including the campus of Mizoram University itself.
Conservation Status and Regional Significance
Based on available data, the researchers have classified the species under the “Least Concern” category according to IUCN Red List criteria. This designation reflects the snake’s occurrence across multiple locations and the absence of any major anthropogenic threats currently impacting its population.
Beyond the discovery itself, the study provides an updated inventory of Mizoram’s herpetofauna. The comprehensive checklist documents 169 species, comprising 52 amphibians and 117 reptiles. This updated record serves as a valuable reference for future conservation planning and ecological research in the region.
Implications for Biodiversity Research
The discovery underscores the critical importance of continued biological surveys in northeast India, particularly in forested hill tracts where many species remain undocumented or poorly understood. The region’s unique geography and climatic conditions support high levels of endemism, yet much of its biodiversity remains unexplored.
Researchers emphasize that this finding is not merely an isolated taxonomic achievement but a reminder of the vast knowledge gaps that still exist in one of India’s most biodiverse areas. The collaborative nature of the study—bringing together expertise from multiple countries—also highlights the value of international partnerships in advancing scientific understanding.
As field surveys continue and molecular techniques become more accessible, scientists anticipate further discoveries that will refine our understanding of species distributions and evolutionary relationships across the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot. The identification of Calamaria mizoramensis represents a meaningful step forward in documenting and preserving the region’s natural heritage.
