Major Shift in Postgraduate Medical Education Announced

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has unveiled a landmark decision that will reshape the landscape of postgraduate medical training in India. According to the official directive, the academic year 2026-27 will mark the final admission cycle for postgraduate diploma programs in medicine. Starting from the 2027-28 session, no fresh enrollments will be accepted into these diploma courses.

Transition from Diploma to Degree Programs

In a public notice issued on June 22, the Commission outlined its plan to systematically discontinue all PG diploma courses. These programs will be converted into corresponding broad specialty degree courses, namely MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery). This transformation is designed to streamline the qualifications offered across medical institutions and align them with contemporary academic standards.

Instructions for Medical Colleges

The Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), operating under the NMC, has directed medical colleges to initiate the process of converting their existing diploma seats into MD/MS seats. To facilitate this transition, institutions must submit applications to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). The MARB is expected to launch a dedicated online portal shortly, with detailed application deadlines and procedural guidelines to be communicated separately.

Existing Infrastructure to Support the Transition

Many medical colleges across the country currently offer both diploma and degree courses in the same specialties, while others operate diploma programs exclusively. The Commission notes that these institutions already possess the necessary infrastructure, faculty strength, and clinical facilities to support degree programs without significant additional investment. However, approval for seat conversion will only be granted to institutions that fully comply with the standards and requirements set by the NMC.

Rationale Behind the Decision

The primary objective of this policy change is to bring greater standardization to postgraduate medical education nationwide. By consolidating diploma programs into degree courses, the NMC aims to strengthen the credibility of specialist training and ensure that qualifications meet uniform academic benchmarks. The Commission believes this move will optimize the use of existing institutional resources and enable a more structured approach to producing specialist doctors in the future.

Scope of the Notification

The official notification has been circulated to all medical colleges under the NMC’s purview, as well as to state medical education departments and universities. These bodies have been instructed to take the necessary steps in a timely manner to ensure smooth compliance with the new regulations.

What This Means for Aspiring Medical Professionals

For students considering postgraduate medical education, this transition signals a shift toward more comprehensive degree-based training. Those who secure admission to diploma courses in the 2026-27 session will be the last cohort to pursue these programs. Prospective candidates should stay informed about the evolving admission criteria and prepare accordingly, as the landscape of medical specialization in India moves toward a more unified degree framework.

The decision reflects a broader effort to modernize medical education and align it with global standards, ensuring that the next generation of healthcare specialists is equipped with the most robust and recognized qualifications available.
