NEET UG 2026 Cancelled: NTA Chief Addresses Paper Leak Allegations and Re-Exam Plans

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination that was held on May 3, following reports that a significant portion of the question paper had been compromised before the test date. The decision, made with approval from the central government, includes a commitment to conduct a fresh examination. The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe. In a recent press conference, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh responded to key questions surrounding the controversy, the cancellation, and the road ahead for aspiring medical students.

Clarifying the Extent of the Paper Leak

When asked whether the NEET UG 2026 question paper was fully leaked, Singh offered a nuanced response. He explained that the exam uses multiple versions of the question paper, and none of these full versions have surfaced publicly or appeared in the market. However, he acknowledged that a PDF circulating online contained several questions that closely matched those in the actual exam. While he stopped short of calling it a complete paper leak, Singh stated emphatically that even a single matching question represents a serious breach of the NTA’s core principles of zero tolerance for errors and zero tolerance for malpractice. He affirmed that the agency takes full responsibility and will take strict action against those found responsible.

Timeline of Detection and the Decision to Cancel

Singh revealed that the NTA first became aware of the potential leak on May 7. The days that followed were dedicated to verifying the authenticity of the information and assessing the scale of the breach. He clarified that determining the exact method of the leak—where it occurred, how it was executed, and which states were affected—falls under the jurisdiction of the CBI. The NTA’s role, he noted, was to confirm that a violation of procedure had taken place. The severity of the breach was such that the agency felt compelled to make the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the examination entirely.

A Stern Warning Against Future Leaks

Addressing the broader issue of question paper leaks, Singh expressed strong disapproval, calling the incident unfortunate and unacceptable. He stressed that such actions are not commendable in any way and that what happened was unequivocally wrong. The NTA, he assured, remains committed to conducting fair and transparent examinations. He reiterated that if any irregularity is detected in the future, the agency will not hesitate to cancel the exam and re-administer it in a clean and secure manner.

Timeline for the NEET UG Re-Examination

On the crucial question of when the re-examination will take place, Singh stated that he will consult with his team to finalize a new date. He emphasized that the primary goal is to conduct the exam as quickly as possible to avoid disrupting the academic calendar and the admission schedule for medical colleges. The NTA aims to announce the revised schedule within the next seven to ten days, providing students with clarity and ample time to prepare.

On Allegations of Internal Complicity

Responding to questions about potential involvement of NTA officials in the leak, Singh was measured in his response. He appealed to the CBI to ensure that whoever is found guilty—whether an insider or an external party—is duly punished to eradicate this problem at its root. Singh noted that he assumed his role as DG on April 1 and, therefore, refrained from making any premature judgments about the system or blaming individuals without a complete investigation. He expressed full confidence in the CBI’s ability to conduct a fair and independent inquiry, assuring that any NTA official required for questioning will be made available with complete freedom and cooperation.

The cancellation of NEET UG 2026 has undoubtedly created uncertainty among thousands of medical aspirants across the country. However, the NTA’s swift action, coupled with the involvement of the CBI, signals a firm stance against malpractice. Students are now awaiting the announcement of the new exam date, with the agency’s assurance that the re-test will be conducted at the earliest possible opportunity to keep the admission process on track.
