New STEM Labs in Odisha Aim to Open Skies for Young Women

A significant step toward empowering young women in science and aviation was taken in Odisha’s Sambalpur district. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated a specialized program designed to equip female students with skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), along with training opportunities for careers in the aviation sector.

The launch event took place on Saturday at three educational institutions across the district. This initiative is seen as a major move to bridge the gender gap in these critical and rapidly growing fields.

Inauguration at Multiple Schools

The first phase of the program was officially launched at three locations, including the Chandrasekhar Behera (CSB) District School in Sambalpur. The other two institutions were Gourchandra High School in Redkhol and the Government High School in Kuchinda.

Speaking at the annual function ‘Jyotirgamay’ at the CSB District School, which coincided with National Girl Child Day, Minister Pradhan highlighted the transformative potential of the new facilities. He described them not merely as science laboratories but as powerful instruments for his daughters to reach for the sky and achieve their dreams. He emphasized that students will now be able to turn their aspirations into reality through the integration of knowledge and science.

Bridging Education and Aviation Careers

The core objective of the ‘Boeing Sukanya Program’ is to encourage more girls to enter India’s expanding aviation industry. Minister Pradhan elaborated that these laboratories will provide not only the scientific foundation required to become a pilot but also comprehensive aerospace education and hands-on training.

He expressed confidence that the initiative will ignite a new spark of scientific temper and innovation among students, particularly girls. The labs are expected to become landmarks in the field of technical education in the coming years.

Highlighting the future demand, Minister Pradhan noted that the number of aircraft in India is projected to grow to 15,000 over the next decade. This expansion will necessitate a substantial workforce of pilots, engineers, and designers, creating immense career opportunities for skilled youth.

A Collaborative Effort for Educational Equality

The program is a collaborative venture between Boeing India and the Learning Links Foundation (LLF), a non-profit organization dedicated to education and skill development in India. Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India and South Asia, explained that the Sukanya program is rooted in the belief that equal opportunities in education foster innovation. The initiative is specifically designed to provide a platform for girls to advance and excel.

Dr. Anjali Prakash, Chairperson of LLF, added that these laboratories are crafted to inspire students to ask questions, learn new concepts, and innovate. The program also aims to strengthen the capabilities of teachers and the overall educational framework of the schools. She reiterated that the primary goal is to prepare a larger number of students, especially girls, for successful careers in STEM fields.

Part of a National Initiative

This launch is a part of a broader national initiative that was started in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this scheme, Boeing and LLF are establishing STEM labs in government schools across the country. In addition to the labs, the program provides scholarships to support girls in realizing their dreams of becoming pilots, thereby increasing female representation in India’s aviation sector.

Hands-On Learning for a Brighter Future

The newly established STEM labs are equipped with learning kits, digital tools, and practical modules. This setup allows students to learn science, aviation, and aero-modeling through hands-on experience rather than just theoretical study. Students from classes 6 to 10 will participate in activity-based learning, workshops, and exploratory sessions.

This practical approach is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the subjects and prepare them to compete in state and national-level STEM and aviation competitions. By fostering a spirit of inquiry and providing tangible skills, the program aims to create a robust pipeline of future scientists, engineers, and aviators, ensuring that young women are well-represented in these high-growth sectors.
