OpenAI Introduces Trusted Contact Feature for ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence is evolving beyond simple question-and-answer interactions. OpenAI has launched a new safety feature for ChatGPT designed to protect users in moments of crisis. This tool, called the Trusted Contact feature, focuses on mental health support and timely intervention when users may be at risk of self-harm.

How the Trusted Contact Feature Works

The Trusted Contact feature is available to users aged 18 and older worldwide, with a minimum age of 19 in South Korea. It allows individuals to designate a trusted person—such as a friend, family member, or caregiver—as their emergency contact within the ChatGPT system. When the AI detects language or patterns that suggest serious self-harm or severe psychological distress during a conversation, it automatically sends an alert to the chosen contact.

This alert is delivered through multiple channels, including email, SMS, and in-app notifications. The goal is to ensure that someone who can offer immediate support is informed as quickly as possible, potentially preventing tragic outcomes.

Privacy and Data Protection

OpenAI has taken careful steps to address privacy concerns with this feature. The alert sent to the trusted contact does not include the user’s full chat history or any personal information. Instead, it provides a general warning and directs the contact to helpful resources. This means users can feel secure that their private conversations remain confidential, while still receiving critical support when needed.

Collaboration with Mental Health Experts

The development of the Trusted Contact feature was not done in isolation. OpenAI collaborated with mental health specialists, researchers, and organizations such as the American Psychological Association. Their input helped shape the system to respond appropriately to sensitive situations without overstepping boundaries or causing unnecessary alarm.

Integration with Existing Safety Systems

This new tool works alongside ChatGPT’s existing safety measures. Those measures include suggesting crisis helplines, providing referrals to emergency support services, and actively blocking instructions related to self-harm. The Trusted Contact feature adds another layer of protection by involving a real person who can intervene directly.

  • Alerts are sent via email, SMS, or in-app notifications
  • Only general warnings and resource links are shared, not private chats
  • Feature is available to users 18+ globally, 19+ in South Korea
  • Developed with input from mental health experts and researchers

Why This Matters for User Safety

Mental health crises often require human connection and immediate attention. While AI can offer valuable support, it cannot replace the care of a trusted individual. By bridging the gap between technology and personal relationships, this feature aims to provide users with a safety net during their most vulnerable moments. OpenAI continues to refine its approach to AI safety, ensuring that tools like ChatGPT serve not only as information resources but also as responsible guardians of user well-being.

As digital interactions become more integrated into daily life, features like this highlight the potential for AI to play a compassionate role in mental health support, while respecting user privacy and autonomy.
