Paytm Introduces Fingerprint Authentication for UPI Payments
Digital payments in India have taken a significant leap forward with a major update to the UPI system. Starting April 1, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India implemented enhanced security measures across various digital payment channels, including ATMs, bank transactions, and UPI. For UPI users, this means a fundamental shift in how payments are authorized. Instead of typing in a PIN after scanning a QR code, users can now simply place their fingerprint on the screen to complete transactions. This new biometric feature is designed to make payments faster, more convenient, and more secure than ever before.
How the New Biometric System Works
From April 1, 2026, a new biometric authentication system has been rolled out for UPI payment apps. This change streamlines the payment process, eliminating the need to remember and enter PINs. Users can now authenticate transactions by pressing their finger against the screen. However, to take advantage of this feature, you must first activate fingerprint authentication within your UPI app. For Paytm users, the activation process is straightforward and can be completed in just a few steps.
Step-by-Step Guide to Activate Fingerprint Payment on Paytm
Update and Open the Paytm App
Begin by ensuring that the Paytm app on your phone is updated to the latest version. If it is already up to date, simply open the app. Once on the home screen, look for a prominent button labeled “Active Now” at the top. This button is your gateway to enabling fingerprint payments.
Select Your Bank Account
Tapping the “Active Now” button will display a list of all bank accounts linked to your Paytm account. If you have multiple accounts, you have the flexibility to assign a unique fingerprint to each one. Simply tap on the account you wish to configure first.
Register Your Fingerprint
After selecting an account, the app will prompt you to place your finger on the fingerprint sensor. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration. Once the fingerprint is successfully recorded, you will see a confirmation message indicating that the biometric setup for that account is complete.
Repeat for Additional Accounts
If you have more than one bank account linked to Paytm, repeat the process for each one. This allows you to use different fingers for different accounts, adding an extra layer of personalization and security.
Confirmation and Usage
Once all accounts are configured, you will receive a notification stating: “All your accounts are now secured with fingerprint.” From this point forward, whenever you scan a QR code to make a payment, the app will present you with the option to authenticate the transaction using your registered fingerprint instead of entering a PIN.
Benefits of the New System
- Enhanced Security: Fingerprint authentication is unique to each individual, making it much harder for unauthorized users to access your accounts or complete transactions.
- Faster Transactions: Placing a finger on the sensor is quicker than typing a PIN, reducing the time spent at checkout counters or when making peer-to-peer payments.
- Improved Convenience: No more struggling to remember complex PINs or worrying about someone watching you enter them. A simple touch is all it takes.
- Multi-Account Support: Users with multiple bank accounts can assign different fingerprints to each one, keeping their finances organized and secure.
Important Considerations
While the new biometric system simplifies the payment process, it is essential to ensure that your phone’s fingerprint sensor is clean and functioning properly. Additionally, users are advised to keep their Paytm app updated to continue receiving the latest security features and improvements. The transition from PIN-based to fingerprint-based authentication represents a significant step forward in making digital payments both user-friendly and secure for everyone.
