The Rise of Pemba: A Humanoid Robot Conquers 6,000 Metres and Sets Its Sights on Everest

Humanoid robots are no longer confined to the sterile environments of factories, laboratories, or living rooms. They are now venturing into the world’s most unforgiving natural landscapes. In a groundbreaking achievement, a humanoid robot named Pemba has successfully climbed over 6,000 metres on Ecuador’s Chimborazo volcano, setting a new record for robotic mountaineering. This feat is just the beginning, as the team behind Pemba is already planning its next ambitious mission: scaling the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest.

From Volcanic Slopes to Himalayan Heights

Pemba, standing just 1.32 metres tall and weighing 35 kilograms, has already proven its mettle in extreme conditions. The robot navigated the icy, treacherous terrain of Chimborazo, enduring freezing temperatures and severe oxygen deprivation. While the machine handled much of the climb autonomously, the team had to assist it on the most technically challenging sections. Despite these hurdles, Pemba became the first humanoid robot to reach such an altitude, marking a significant milestone in robotics and exploration.

According to the developers, this is merely a stepping stone. The ultimate vision includes deploying Pemba on Mount Everest, followed by missions to the Moon and eventually Mars. The robot’s ability to operate in harsh, low-oxygen environments makes it a promising candidate for extraterrestrial exploration.

Why Everest? A Mission Beyond Records

The proposed Everest expedition is not just about breaking records. Pemba will be tasked with several critical objectives that could benefit both science and the environment. These include:

  • Collecting scattered waste and debris left by previous climbers on the mountain.
  • Gathering environmental data, such as temperature, air pressure, and pollution levels, at various altitudes.
  • Monitoring hazardous zones that are too dangerous for human climbers to access.
  • Testing the robot’s endurance and functionality in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The project is a collaborative effort between a U.S.-based non-profit organization and a Nepalese expedition company, highlighting a growing trend of international cooperation in robotics and environmental conservation.

How Will Pemba Reach Everest’s Summit?

The plan for Pemba’s Everest ascent is meticulously structured. The robot will be transported in sections to different camps along the mountain. It will be reassembled at key locations, starting from Base Camp at 5,364 metres and moving up to Camp IV at 7,920 metres. Once operational, Pemba will use its mechanical arms to collect small pieces of trash, such as discarded equipment and food packaging, along the route.

This phased approach minimizes the risk of damage during transport and allows the team to test the robot’s systems at progressively higher altitudes. The goal is to demonstrate that humanoid robots can perform useful tasks in extreme environments, paving the way for future applications in disaster response and space exploration.

Overcoming the Cold: Engineering Challenges

One of the biggest technical hurdles Pemba will face on Everest is the extreme cold. Temperatures on the mountain can plummet below -20 degrees Celsius, which can severely impact battery performance and mechanical components. To counter this, engineers are developing a heated battery compartment and using a specialized lubricant typically employed in spacecraft. These innovations are designed to keep the robot operational even in the harshest conditions.

Additionally, the team is working on a machine-learning-based system to help Pemba maintain balance on uneven, slippery terrain. This will allow the robot to adjust its gait in real time, reducing the risk of falls on icy slopes.

Connectivity and Autonomy on the Mountain

Communication is another major challenge. At lower altitudes, Pemba will rely on satellite connectivity to receive instructions and transmit data. However, as it climbs higher, mobile networks become unavailable. In these zones, the robot will operate autonomously, using its onboard sensors and pre-programmed algorithms to navigate and complete tasks. This dual-mode operation—remote control at lower altitudes and full autonomy higher up—ensures that Pemba can function effectively regardless of network availability.

Legal Hurdles in Nepal

Perhaps the most significant obstacle to the Everest mission is not technological but legal. Nepal currently has no regulations governing the use of non-human climbers or robots on its mountains. This lack of a legal framework previously prevented the mission from receiving approval. However, the Nepalese government is now considering the creation of new rules that would cover safety standards, operational procedures, and permit fees for robotic expeditions.

If these regulations are enacted, Pemba could be deployed for testing as early as September to November of 2026, or during the winter months from December 2026 to February 2027. The estimated cost of the mission ranges from $200,000 to $500,000, depending on permit fees and the duration of the expedition.

The Future of Humanoid Robotics

The developers of Pemba have high hopes for the robot’s potential. If it successfully navigates the challenges of Everest, the implications go far beyond mountaineering. Such robots could be deployed in search-and-rescue operations, scientific research, environmental monitoring, and even future lunar or Martian missions. Pemba’s journey from a volcanic peak in Ecuador to the roof of the world is more than a technical achievement—it is a glimpse into a future where robots and humans work together to explore the most inaccessible places on Earth and beyond.
