UPPCL Shifts Prepaid Smart Meters to Postpaid: What Happens to Your Remaining Balance?

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has begun transitioning prepaid smart meters to a postpaid billing system across the state. This change, prompted by a government announcement, has left many consumers confused about their leftover balance and how to track it. If you are among those affected, here is a clear breakdown of how your unused funds will be handled and how you can check your account from home.

Why the Switch from Prepaid to Postpaid?

The shift means that instead of recharging your meter in advance, you will now receive a monthly bill for the electricity you actually consume. UPPCL has started notifying users via SMS that their meters are operating in postpaid mode. The first postpaid bills are expected to be issued from June 2026. These bills will be delivered through the official app, SMS, and WhatsApp, eliminating the need for manual recharges.

What Happens to Your Old Prepaid Balance?

If you had recharged your prepaid meter before the transition and had unused funds, do not worry. According to UPPCL, that balance will not disappear. Instead, it will be automatically adjusted against your future postpaid electricity bills. For example, if you had a certain amount remaining in your meter, that exact sum will be deducted from the total due on your next bill. This ensures you are not paying twice for the same electricity.

How to Check Your Remaining Balance on the App

You can easily view your leftover balance using the official UPPCL consumer app. Follow these steps:

  • Log in to the UPPCL consumer app using your credentials.
  • Navigate to the home screen where your billing details appear.
  • Look below the bill information section—your unused balance will be displayed there.
  • This amount is the same one that will be adjusted in your upcoming bill.

UPPCL has indicated that the May 2026 bill will likely be issued in the early days of June 2026. Keep an eye on the app for updates.

Alternative Ways to Check Your Balance Without the App

If you prefer not to use the app, you have other options. You can call the UPPCL helpline at 1912. When you call, be ready to provide your customer ID, details of your last recharge, and any transaction information. A customer service representative will then inform you of your remaining balance and explain how it will be credited to your bill.

Requesting Balance Information via Email

For those who want written documentation but do not wish to use the app or phone, email is a viable alternative. To obtain your balance details, you will need to send an email to your local electricity distribution company (discom). Include your customer ID, a screenshot of your last recharge, and the transaction ID. Choose the correct email address for your area’s discom when submitting your request. The discom will then provide a written confirmation of your unused balance and its adjustment process.

Key Points to Remember

  • Your prepaid balance is not lost—it will be applied to future postpaid bills.
  • Bills will be sent via app, SMS, or WhatsApp starting June 2026.
  • You can check your balance through the UPPCL app, helpline, or email.
  • Always keep your customer ID and last recharge details handy for verification.

This transition is designed to simplify billing and reduce the need for frequent recharges. By understanding how your balance carries over, you can avoid confusion and ensure you are only charged for what you use.
