IIT Delhi Tops Indian Institutions in QS World University Rankings 2027

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has once again secured its position as India’s highest-ranked institution in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The institute achieved a global rank of 118, matching the best-ever performance by any Indian university in this prestigious annual assessment. This accomplishment underscores the growing competitiveness of Indian institutions on the international academic stage.

India’s presence in the global rankings has expanded significantly this year, with 52 Indian universities now featured in the list. This marks a substantial increase from just 14 institutions in 2017, positioning India as the fifth most represented country worldwide. According to analysts, this growth trajectory is the fastest among all G20 nations, reflecting the transformative changes underway in the country’s higher education landscape.

Major Improvements Across Indian Universities

The latest rankings reveal encouraging trends for Indian higher education. Among the 52 Indian institutions listed, 26 universities improved their positions compared to the previous year, while nine maintained their existing ranks. Fifteen institutions experienced a decline, and two made their debut appearance in the rankings this year. Notably, more than half of the returning Indian universities demonstrated year-on-year progress.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan welcomed the results, attributing the improved performance to the reforms introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He emphasized that the strong showing reflects the policy’s transformative impact on the country’s academic ecosystem.

“India’s impressive performance in the latest global university rankings demonstrates the far-reaching effects of NEP 2020,” Pradhan stated. “With 52 universities from 19 states and union territories now represented, and over half of them improving their standings, India is emerging as a leading global knowledge hub powered by research, innovation, and the talent of our youth.”

Record-Breaking Performances Beyond IITs

While IIT Delhi leads the pack, other Indian institutions have also achieved significant milestones. IIT Bombay secured the 134th position globally, followed by IIT Madras at 170th, IIT Kharagpur at 205th, and IIT Kanpur at 221st. Delhi University improved its ranking to 322nd, while Jamia Millia Islamia climbed to 686th place.

Perhaps more notably, the rankings indicate that India’s success is no longer confined to the IIT system. Eighteen Indian institutions, including Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), achieved their best-ever rankings this year. The majority of these top performers are non-IIT institutions, signaling a broadening of excellence across the country’s diverse higher education sector.

Research Output and Employer Recognition on the Rise

Indian universities have demonstrated exceptional performance in research and employability metrics. Eleven Indian institutions now rank among the world’s top 100 universities for citations per faculty, while six have secured places in the global top 100 for employer reputation. India has also emerged as the world’s third-largest producer of research output, a testament to the growing emphasis on academic inquiry and innovation.

Several institutions made remarkable upward strides in this year’s rankings. VIT climbed 94 positions to reach 597th place, BITS Pilani advanced 93 spots to secure the 575th position, and Jamia Millia Islamia improved by more than 75 ranks. These gains highlight the collective momentum across India’s higher education sector.

Internationalization Remains a Key Challenge

Despite these achievements, the report identifies internationalization as an area requiring continued attention. Indian universities still face challenges in attracting foreign students and faculty members. The report suggests that while research capabilities and graduate employability have improved markedly, institutions must enhance their global appeal to compete more effectively on the international stage.

Building a stronger international academic reputation will be crucial for Indian universities seeking to elevate their standing further. The report notes that increased collaboration with overseas institutions and greater faculty mobility could help address this gap.

Future Outlook for Indian Higher Education

Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, highlighted the significant role Indian universities will play in shaping the nation’s future. She noted that these institutions are not merely delivering education but also fostering new ideas, research, and technological advancements that will strengthen the country’s economy and development trajectory.

Turner observed that India’s growing investment in education, research, and innovation is now reflected in global rankings. The QS World University Rankings 2027 assessed more than 1,500 universities across 106 countries, with Indian institutions recording a robust performance across multiple parameters.

The continued ascent of Indian universities in global rankings signals a positive trajectory for the country’s higher education system. As institutions build on their strengths in research and employability while addressing the challenge of internationalization, India’s position as an emerging global education destination appears increasingly secure. The combination of policy support, institutional commitment, and a young, ambitious student population positions the country well for further gains in future editions of these rankings.
