Rajya Sabha Raises Alarm Over Social Media’s Toll on Adolescent Mental Health

On Wednesday, the Rajya Sabha witnessed a serious debate on the escalating impact of social media on the mental well-being of young people, with lawmakers expressing deep concern over a rise in suicide cases among adolescents. Congress MP J.B. Mather Hisham highlighted that many youths are struggling to distinguish between reality and the virtual world, a confusion that is taking a dangerous toll.

Korean Content and Digital Influence Under Scrutiny

Hisham pointed to growing unease among educators regarding the pervasive influence of South Korean online content, pop culture, and digital games. According to the MP, children are becoming so deeply immersed in these digital platforms that they are gradually disconnecting from real-life interactions and experiences. He specifically referenced a tragic incident in Ghaziabad, where three sisters reportedly died by suicide, an event that was linked to exposure to Korean media content.

A Crisis of Confused Priorities

Speaking from Kerala, Hisham described the situation as deeply alarming. He noted that children, who should be spending their formative years playing, learning, and developing new skills, are instead resorting to extreme measures like suicide. Recent data, he argued, indicates a troubling surge in behavioral changes, cyberbullying, and suicidal tendencies—all of which are tied to the digital environment that today’s children inhabit.

Call for Mental Health Integration in Education

The Congress MP urged the government to treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves. He proposed that mental health education be formally integrated into the school curriculum, ensuring that children receive timely guidance and professional counseling. Early intervention, he stressed, could prevent many of these tragedies.

Accountability in Public Administration Also Raised

During the same session, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Ashok Kumar Mittal used Zero Hour to highlight a different but equally pressing concern. He drew attention to fatalities caused by potholes on roads and criticized the slow response of administrative bodies. Mittal called for clear accountability mechanisms for public officials, arguing that such negligence must be curbed through stricter oversight and timely action.

  • Key Concerns Raised: The link between social media, Korean pop culture, and rising adolescent suicide rates.
  • Proposed Solution: Inclusion of mental health awareness and counseling in school education.
  • Secondary Issue: Administrative negligence leading to road accidents and loss of life.

The discussions in the upper house reflect a growing recognition that digital platforms, while offering connectivity, are also contributing to a mental health crisis among the youth. Lawmakers from both sides emphasized the need for a balanced approach—one that harnesses the benefits of technology while protecting vulnerable minds from its darker effects.
