Smartphone Market in 2026: Fewer Shipments, Higher Revenue
The global smartphone industry is poised for a paradoxical shift in 2026. While overall shipments of smartphone processors are expected to decline, manufacturers are likely to see a significant boost in revenue, driven by rising demand for premium devices. This trend marks a strategic pivot from volume-based sales to value-focused offerings.
Processor Shipments Set to Drop by 7%
According to a recent report from Counterpoint Research, global smartphone system-on-chip (SoC) shipments could fall by approximately 7% year-over-year in 2026. This would be the first decline after several consecutive years of growth. Despite fewer units moving off shelves, the total revenue generated by the market is projected to grow by double digits. The divergence highlights a fundamental change in how companies approach their product lines.
Budget Phones Face Rising Costs
One of the key challenges for low-cost smartphones will be the increasing price of memory components. Chip manufacturers are prioritizing production of high-bandwidth memory chips for data centers, which offer higher profit margins. This shift is expected to squeeze the supply and raise costs for processors used in budget devices. Companies that specialize in chips for 4G or entry-level 5G phones will feel the most pressure in 2026.
Premium Phones Gain Traction
Consumers are increasingly favoring feature-rich premium smartphones over cheaper, stripped-down alternatives. Even if fewer phones are sold overall, this trend allows manufacturers to maintain healthy profit margins. Industry estimates suggest that one in every three smartphones sold in 2026 will cost over $500 (approximately 40,000 rupees). This move toward higher-end devices is reshaping the competitive landscape.
2nm Processors Enter the Race
On the technology front, a major leap is underway. Companies are transitioning from 3nm to 2nm processor architectures, promising significant performance and efficiency gains. Samsung took an early lead by unveiling the world’s first 2nm smartphone processor, the Exynos 2600, in December 2025. Apple and Qualcomm are also expected to benefit substantially from this premium shift, while MediaTek continues to strengthen its position in the Android market.
AI Becomes a Game-Changer
By 2026, high-end smartphones will rival supercomputers in terms of artificial intelligence capabilities. Premium devices are expected to achieve AI performance levels of up to 100 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Approximately 90% of premium phones will support on-device AI, enabling advanced features to run without an internet connection. In contrast, mid-range devices will rely on cloud-based AI solutions to keep costs under control.
Industry experts note that a full recovery in the smartphone market is unlikely before 2027. Until then, manufacturers will continue to streamline their portfolios and attract customers with cutting-edge features like AI, rather than competing solely on price or volume.
