Samsung Unveils the World’s Fastest Mobile Storage Chip

A smartphone’s performance isn’t solely determined by its processor. The storage chip inside plays an equally critical role, handling everything from photos and videos to apps and system data. Samsung has now made a bold leap in this domain by introducing the world’s first UFS 5.0 storage solution. According to the company, this new chip is the fastest UFS storage ever created, promising to dramatically boost smartphone speed, enhance AI capabilities, and improve battery efficiency.

How Fast Is the New UFS 5.0?

Samsung reports that the UFS 5.0 achieves sequential read speeds of up to 10.8 GB per second—more than double the performance of the current UFS 4.1 standard. Write speeds are equally impressive, reaching up to 9.5 GB per second. In practical terms, this means apps will launch faster, large files will transfer in seconds, and AI-driven features will operate with noticeably less lag. Users can expect a smoother, more responsive experience overall.

Better Battery Life and Smaller Size

Speed isn’t the only advantage. Samsung claims the UFS 5.0 consumes over 40 percent less power than its predecessor. This reduction in energy draw places less strain on the phone’s battery, potentially extending usage time between charges. Remarkably, despite delivering higher performance, the new chip is approximately 16.7 percent smaller than previous models. This compact design gives manufacturers greater flexibility to create thinner, lighter devices without sacrificing storage capabilities.

Why It Matters for AI

Modern smartphones are increasingly handling AI processing directly on the device rather than relying on the cloud. Tasks like real-time language translation, image recognition, and on-device generative AI demand extremely fast data transfer between the storage and the processor. The UFS 5.0 is engineered to meet these demands, ensuring that AI features run efficiently and without interruption.

Jangseok Choi, head of memory product planning at Samsung Electronics, emphasizes that storage has evolved beyond mere data retention. In the age of AI, he notes, storage performance directly determines how well advanced AI features function on a smartphone.

When Will It Be Available?

Samsung plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of 2026. The storage will be offered in capacities up to 1TB. Initially, it will be integrated into flagship smartphones, extended reality (XR) headsets, and AI-powered wearable devices. This next-generation technology is expected to play a pivotal role in the AI smartphones launching over the coming years.
