Since then, AI has gradually expanded its footprint across the globe. He argued that the real challenge lies in educating the younger generation about its proper use.
According to him, children must first understand four fundamental questions: How should AI be used? How much should it be used? When is it appropriate to use AI? And equally important, when should it not be used? If these four questions are clear in a student’s mind, they will be better equipped to navigate the digital world responsibly. He stressed that these are not just technical questions but ethical ones that require careful thought and guidance from educators and parents alike.
Building an AI Ecosystem on Campus
The Dean went on to share insights from his own institution, Subharti University in Meerut. He revealed that they do not teach AI merely as a subject. Instead, over the past two years, they have been developing a comprehensive AI ecosystem across the entire campus. This initiative is already about 80 percent successful, he claimed. The university uses AI to monitor academic procedures, track student assignments, and oversee examinations. This data-driven approach helps identify which students are slow learners and which are fast learners, and it also flags attendance issues early on.
Perhaps most impressively, the campus is equipped with AI-enabled cameras that can detect signs of stress among students. When a student appears to be struggling emotionally or mentally, the system alerts the administration so that counseling and mentorship can be provided promptly. This proactive use of AI goes beyond academics and touches on student well-being, a crucial aspect often overlooked in traditional education systems. The university also leverages AI in its placement processes, ensuring that students are matched with suitable career opportunities based on their skills and performance data.
India’s Role as a Technology User vs. Creator
The Director of IIM Lucknow brought a macroeconomic and strategic perspective to the table. He observed that future generations will face unprecedented challenges as AI continues to permeate every sector. The debate, he argued, is no longer about whether AI will expand; that is a given. The real question is how India will strengthen its capabilities and skills in this domain to remain competitive on a global scale.
He pointed out that India currently appears to be primarily a consumer of technology rather than a creator. This raises important concerns. He urged the audience to consider where the computers, mobile phones, chips, and other digital devices are actually manufactured. Who controls the research, innovation, and patents behind these technologies? These are critical questions that need serious deliberation if India is to move up the value chain.
To better understand this technological landscape, he outlined three key questions that policymakers and educators must address:
- Who is building the technology and digital tools that we rely on daily?
- Where are the chips and electronic devices being manufactured, and in which country or region?
- Who is the largest consumer of these technologies?
According to him, India currently finds itself predominantly on the user side of this equation. While being a major consumer is not inherently negative, it does highlight a dependency that could be problematic in the long run. He called for a more strategic approach that encourages domestic innovation, supports research and development, and positions India not just as a market for technology but as a contributor to its evolution.
