Redefining Success: Why a Meaningful Life Matters More Than Fame or Fortune

At a recent thought leadership gathering in Dehradun, renowned spiritual speaker Devi Chitralekha offered a powerful perspective on what it truly means to succeed in today’s world. Speaking on a platform dedicated to sustainable development and cultural discourse, she challenged the modern obsession with external markers of achievement—social media followers, wealth, and public recognition—and urged listeners to prioritize a deeper, more fulfilling path.

The Difference Between a Successful Life and a Meaningful One

Opening her session with a warm greeting to the land of Uttarakhand, Devi Chitralekha emphasized that spirituality is not limited to rituals or temple visits. It is, she explained, about cultivating good values, nurturing the right thoughts, and steering one’s life in a purposeful direction. She introduced a crucial distinction that resonated deeply with the audience: the difference between a successful life and a meaningful life.

“Everyone has their own definition of success in this world,” she said. “I believe that while a successful life is important, a meaningful life is far more essential. It is necessary to achieve, but it is even more necessary to make your life count.”

She observed that in contemporary society, people often equate success with name, fame, and money. The number of followers on social media has become a common yardstick for worth. However, she reminded the audience that the precious gift of human existence has been given for a higher purpose. When a person lives a meaningful life, inner joy becomes naturally visible. Drawing a simple analogy, she compared life to a school assignment: some students complete their tasks on time and move ahead, while others procrastinate and fall behind. Similarly, the divine has sent each person into this world with a unique opportunity.

Two Questions That Define Our Existence

Devi Chitralekha shared a profound teaching about the moment when a soul returns to the divine. At that point, she said, two essential questions will be asked. The first is: “I gave you this invaluable life—did you live it with joy?” She explained that when genuine happiness enters a person’s life, that life automatically becomes meaningful. The second question follows: “Did you share that joy with others?”

“If the answer to both questions is yes,” she continued, “only then will the divine feel that giving you life was the right decision. And that is when true contentment and grace are received.”

The Rare Blessing of Being Human in India

Extending her wishes for the festival of Ganga Dussehra, Devi Chitralekha called upon everyone to strive not just for success, but for a life of significance. She described the convergence of three rare blessings: being born as a human, living in a land like India, and inheriting the timeless wisdom of Sanatana Dharma. “There is no greater fortune than this,” she affirmed.

She urged the audience to recognize that the greatest capital we possess is our own body and this human existence. Yet, in the relentless race to earn money, people often lose sight of precious relationships and loved ones. “A person goes out to earn wealth, and by the time the money arrives, so much has already been left behind. Many don’t even find time to sit with their children—and when they finally do, the children are already caught up in their own life’s race.”

Duty Beyond Earnings: The Many Forms of Giving

While acknowledging the necessity of earning a livelihood, Devi Chitralekha stressed that it is equally important to fulfill our responsibilities toward the society that has given us so much. Life should not be measured solely in monetary terms. She highlighted that charity takes many forms—giving a daughter in marriage, offering food, donating blood, and performing selfless service.

She expanded the concept of blood donation beyond its literal meaning. “Donating blood is not just about giving from your body,” she explained. “Filling someone else’s life with happiness and enthusiasm is also a form of blood donation.” Citing the words of a great sage, she noted that when a person is happy, their blood circulation improves. Therefore, every day we should do something that brings joy to others—something that puts a smile on someone’s face because of our actions. “That,” she said, “is the true essence of a meaningful life.”

The Power of Sharing: A Natural Human Virtue

Continuing her discourse, Devi Chitralekha pointed out that while humans learn most of their qualities from others, one virtue must be cultivated from within: the willingness to help others and share one’s own happiness. The real beauty of life lies in sharing the goodness we possess. She drew a powerful example from nature: the rivers Ganga and Yamuna are revered precisely because they give continuously, without discrimination. Their very nature is to share, and that is why they are honored and worshipped.

“A person who knows how to share is truly sweet-natured,” she concluded. “And it is that person who earns the greatest respect in society.”
