The Shadows Behind the Spotlight: Why Depression and Suicide Are Rising Among TV Stars

The recent suicide of television actress Sanchita Ugale has ignited a difficult and necessary conversation. Her father, Machhindra Ugale, revealed that she had been battling depression. This tragedy forces us to confront a troubling question: why are mental health struggles and suicide becoming increasingly common among artists in the television and glamour industry?

The world of television, with its bright lights and glittering sets, often presents a picture of perfection. We see smiling faces on screen and millions of adoring fans on social media. It is easy to assume that the lives of these performers are carefree and full of joy. Yet, behind the camera, the reality is often far more complicated. The glamour and fame rarely expose the darker side of this world, leading many to forget that these stars face their own profound challenges.

Over the past few years, reports of depression and suicide among well-known Indian television and film actresses have made headlines with alarming frequency. This raises a critical question: what circumstances push a successful and beloved artist to take such an extreme step? What are the psychological factors at play?

A Smile on Screen, Pain in the Heart

According to psychiatrists, suicide rarely has a single cause. It is usually the result of a complex mix of factors, including stress, depression, financial pressure, career uncertainty, loneliness, and substance abuse. For an artist, these pressures are amplified by the instability of work in the entertainment industry, the constant need to maintain popularity, online trolling, and personal life struggles. These conditions can leave a person feeling empty, as if all hope has vanished and life has become an unbearable burden.

The case of 22-year-old Sanchita Ugale is a recent, heartbreaking example. On June 14, she took her own life in Mumbai. In an interview, her father shared that she was suffering from depression and was often deeply troubled. He explained that even when she seemed to be in a good mood, she would suddenly slip into a depressive state. The family was so concerned that they accompanied her everywhere, believing that even a half-hour of being alone could be a mistake. They never imagined she would take such a drastic step. He also stated that she was being mentally harassed, sometimes over money and sometimes over other matters, and that something was clearly wrong in her life.

A Pattern of Tragedy: Other Actresses Who Have Taken Their Lives

Sanchita’s story is not an isolated incident. To understand the scope of this crisis, it is important to remember other actresses who have also chosen this path:

  • Prathyusha Banerjee (2016): The actress, famous for her role in the popular serial Balika Vadhu, died by suicide in Mumbai.
  • Sejal Sharma (2020): She was found dead at her residence in Mumbai.
  • Tunisha Sharma (2022): She died by suicide in her vanity van on the set of her TV show Ali Baba in Naya Gaon, Mumbai.
  • Preksha Mehta (2022): The actress known for Crime Patrol took her own life at her home.
  • Vaishali Thakkar (2022): The actress from Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai died by suicide in Indore.

It is crucial to note that while this list focuses on actresses, male actors have also been affected by this tragic trend.

What Mental Health Experts Say

To gain a deeper understanding of these events, we spoke with Dr. Satyakant Trivedi, a senior psychiatrist based in Bhopal. He explains that suicide is almost never the result of a single incident. It is typically linked to a combination of biological, psychological, social, and personal factors.

For artists, specific risks include relationship stress, career pressure, financial uncertainty, constant public scrutiny, criticism on social media, and pre-existing mental health conditions. Dr. Trivedi emphasizes that every individual’s situation is unique, so it would be wrong to guess the specific reasons behind any one event. However, he notes that depression, substance abuse, and major negative life changes have consistently been linked to suicidal risk in many cases.

Why Is the Glamour World So High-Risk?

Dr. Trivedi points out that the television world is not what it appears to be on screen. Artists have the same emotions as anyone else and are just as vulnerable to mental health problems. In fact, they may be even more susceptible because they navigate unique pressures that the public often refuses to believe exist. The pressure of social media, the pain of not getting work when others do, and the constant comparison are major contributors to the rising mental stress among people in the television industry.

Why Don’t People Seek Help, Even When They Are Aware?

This leads to another important question: why do so many educated and aware individuals fail to seek professional help in time? Psychiatrists point to two main reasons:

  1. Lack of Recognition: Many people simply do not understand that the difficulties they are facing are symptoms of a mental health problem.
  2. Poor Coping Mechanisms: Individuals may not realize that their inability to handle stress, failure, rejection, and financial pressure is a sign that they need support.

Dr. Trivedi believes that rising suicide rates are not just stories of personal failure. They are a warning sign of a changing social and psychological landscape. Today, people have more ways to communicate than ever before, yet they feel less emotional support than in the past.

He states, “In my view, the most effective and long-term solution for suicide prevention is to equip people with strong stress-coping skills. We cannot eliminate stress, failure, rejection, financial pressure, or relationship challenges from life. But we can develop the ability to deal with them. Unfortunately, our education system teaches mathematics, science, and technology, but pays very little attention to stress management, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and the skill of asking for help. As for those in the television world, artists must learn that seeking professional help is far better than ending one’s life when faced with failure or rejection.”

He adds, “In the progressive India we envision, we must teach our youth to accept failures with ease and positivity. They need to learn how to handle situations that don’t go their way. Mental flexibility will be the most important tool of the coming centuries.”

The Role of Family, Friends, and Workplaces in Prevention

Preventing suicide is a shared responsibility. Family, friends, colleagues, and workplaces all play a vital role. If you notice a sudden change in a person’s behavior, sleep patterns, appetite, conversation style, or social activities, it is essential to talk to them with sensitivity. Encouraging them to seek advice from mental health professionals and offering emotional support are critical steps. Workplaces can also help by providing mental health support, counseling services, and stress management programs.
