The Rare Celestial Alignment of Ekdant Sankashti Chaturthi 2026

In Hindu tradition, Lord Ganesha is honored as the deity to be invoked before all others. No auspicious undertaking is considered complete without first seeking his blessings. The Ekdant Sankashti Chaturthi, observed on the fourth day of the waning moon in the Jyeshtha month, holds profound spiritual significance. In 2026, this observance takes on an even greater importance due to a rare celestial event: the convergence of Angaraki Chaturthi. This unique alignment amplifies the benefits of the fast and rituals, making it a particularly powerful day for devotees.

Date and Auspicious Timings for the Fast

According to the traditional Hindu calendar, the Chaturthi tithi for the Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha begins on May 5, 2026, at 5:24 AM and concludes on May 6, 2026, at 7:51 AM. The Sankashti Chaturthi fast is traditionally observed based on the moonrise. Since the Chaturthi tithi will be in effect at the time of moonrise on May 5, the fast will be observed on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. Devotees should plan their day accordingly, with the fast commencing at sunrise and concluding after offering prayers to the moon in the evening.

The Extraordinary Significance of Angaraki Chaturthi

This year’s observance falls on a Tuesday, which is known as Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi in the scriptures. It is believed that performing the fast and worship on this day yields manifold more blessings than a regular Chaturthi. From an astrological perspective, this fast is considered especially beneficial for individuals who have a Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction) in their birth charts. Worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day is thought to mitigate the negative influences of Mars, removing obstacles and bringing stability to one’s life. Furthermore, the formation of a Shiv Yoga on this day adds another layer of auspiciousness, making it ideal for spiritual practices and meditation.

Step-by-Step Rituals for the Ekdant Sankashti Chaturthi Fast

Observing this fast with devotion and following the prescribed rituals can bring peace and prosperity. Here is a detailed guide to the puja vidhi:

  • Morning Purification: Begin your day by waking up during Brahma Muhurta (the auspicious period before sunrise). Take a bath and wear clean, fresh clothes to prepare your body and mind for the rituals.
  • Taking the Sankalp: Hold some water in your right hand and make a solemn vow (sankalp) to observe the fast with sincerity and dedication, seeking Lord Ganesha’s blessings for the removal of all difficulties.
  • Idol Installation and Abhishek: Place a red cloth on a small platform and set up an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha. Perform a ritual bath (abhishek) of the idol with Gangajal or clean water, symbolizing purification.
  • Offering Puja Items: Offer the deity items such as unbroken rice (akshata), fresh flowers, incense sticks, a lamp (diya), and sacred grass (durva). Apply a tilak of vermilion (sindoor) on the forehead of the idol.
  • Presenting the Bhog: Prepare and offer a special food offering (bhog) to Lord Ganesha. Modak, his favorite sweet, or ladoos are considered ideal for this purpose.
  • Chanting and Story Recitation: Chant the mantra “Om Ganapataye Namah” with focus and devotion. Recite or listen to the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha, which narrates the significance and glory of this fast.
  • Moonrise and Parana: In the evening, wait for the moon to rise. Offer arghya (water) to the moon while chanting appropriate mantras. Only after this offering should you break your fast (parana) by consuming the bhog and a simple meal.

Important Precautions and Rules to Follow

To ensure the fast is observed correctly and yields its full benefits, devotees should adhere to these essential guidelines:

  • Do Not Eat Before Moonrise: The fast is considered incomplete until you have offered water to the moon. Avoid consuming any food or water (except for the bhog offered during puja) until this ritual is performed.
  • Never View Lord Ganesha’s Back: It is a strong belief that seeing the back of Lord Ganesha’s idol can invite poverty. Always perform darshan (sacred viewing) from the front, facing the deity directly.
  • Avoid Using Tulsi: Unlike many other Hindu rituals, offering Tulsi (holy basil) leaves to Lord Ganesha is prohibited. Only offer durva grass, which is considered highly auspicious for him.
  • Maintain Purity in Diet: On this day, completely avoid tamasic foods such as garlic, onions, and any non-vegetarian items. Also, strive to keep your mind free from negative thoughts and emotions.
  • Care During Arghya: When offering water to the moon, be mindful that the water does not fall on your feet. This is considered inauspicious and should be done with proper reverence and care.
