Schools Across Northern India Shut Down Amid Severe Cold Wave and Dense Fog

A relentless cold wave accompanied by thick fog has disrupted daily life across several northern Indian states. With visibility dropping sharply during early morning and nighttime hours, road, rail, and air travel have been significantly affected. In response, authorities in multiple states and districts have ordered school closures or adjusted school timings to safeguard children from the harsh weather conditions.

Parents and students are strongly advised to verify holiday announcements with their respective local administrations and school authorities, as decisions may vary by region and are subject to change based on evolving weather patterns.

Uttar Pradesh: Complete Closure Until January 1

The cold wave has hit Uttar Pradesh particularly hard, prompting the state government to order the closure of all schools affiliated with ICSE, CBSE, and the UP Board up to Class 12. This directive remains in effect until January 1. The decision applies across the entire state, covering both government and private institutions.

In addition to the full closures, several districts have implemented revised school schedules. Starting January 2, secondary schools in many areas will operate on a new timetable, with classes running from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM instead of the usual morning hours. This adjustment aims to allow students to travel during warmer daylight hours when fog has typically lifted.

Bijnor and Sant Kabir Nagar Announce Holidays

District authorities in Bijnor have declared a holiday for all students from nursery through Class 12 across schools run by all boards. While students have been granted leave for Monday, teachers are still expected to report to their respective schools as usual.

Similarly, in Sant Kabir Nagar, the District Magistrate has ordered that all classes up to Class 12 remain suspended until January 1. Weather experts indicate that there is little immediate relief in sight, with cold conditions expected to persist in the coming days.

Bihar: Extended Shutdowns in Several Districts

Several parts of Bihar have witnessed a significant drop in minimum temperatures, leading to temporary school closures and delayed morning classes. The Patna district administration has extended the period of school shutdown in response to the ongoing cold wave conditions.

In Patna, the District Magistrate has ordered the suspension of classes up to Class 8 in all government and private schools, including Anganwadi centers and pre-schools. This closure remains in effect until December 30. Other districts across the state have also implemented similar measures, with some opting for delayed start times for morning sessions rather than complete closures.

Jharkhand: Ranchi Schools Closed Until December 31

In Jharkhand’s capital city of Ranchi, all government and private schools—from kindergarten through Class 12—will remain closed until December 31. This decision was taken following warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department regarding severely cold conditions in the region. The state has also reported a substantial drop in minimum temperatures across multiple districts, affecting normal life and educational activities.

Delhi NCR: Winter Break Already in Effect

The national capital region witnessed dense fog on the morning of Monday, December 29. The India Meteorological Department has forecast cold day conditions in parts of western Uttar Pradesh for December 28 and 29, with similar possibilities in some areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh as well.

According to various reports, most schools in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram had already closed for their scheduled winter vacation period. As a result, regular classes are not being held in many institutions across the region. However, parents are encouraged to check with their specific schools or local municipal bodies for confirmation, as individual institutions may have different holiday schedules.

Impact on Daily Life and Travel

The severe weather has created widespread challenges beyond just school closures. Commuters face significant delays due to reduced visibility on roads, while train services have also been affected in several regions. Flight operations at major airports have experienced disruptions, with some flights delayed or diverted due to poor visibility conditions.

The meteorological department has advised residents to take necessary precautions, including wearing warm clothing, avoiding unnecessary travel during early morning hours, and staying updated on weather forecasts. Schools that remain open have been instructed to ensure proper heating arrangements and to prioritize student safety above all else.

Guidance for Parents and Students

Given the fluid nature of these announcements, families are urged to stay informed through official channels. Local district administrations continue to monitor weather conditions and may issue further updates or revisions to existing orders. Parents should maintain regular contact with school management to receive timely information about any changes to schedules or reopening dates.

Authorities have emphasized that these measures are precautionary and focused on student welfare. The decision to close schools or adjust timings has been made keeping in mind the vulnerability of young children to extreme cold and the difficulties they may face commuting in dense fog conditions.

As the cold wave continues to grip the region, more districts may issue similar orders in the coming days. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow guidelines issued by local administration to ensure safety during this period of extreme weather.
