Severe Cold Wave Forces School Closures Across Punjab and Jharkhand

As frigid temperatures and dense fog continue to grip large parts of northern and eastern India, state governments have taken decisive action to protect young students from the harsh winter conditions. Punjab has extended its school shutdown until January 13, while Jharkhand has announced closures through January 8, prioritizing child safety amid the extreme weather.

Punjab Extends Winter Break for Third Time

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions across the state. The directive, which covers students from pre-nursery through Class 12, comes in response to the persistent cold wave and thick fog that have disrupted daily life throughout the region.

This marks the third extension of winter holidays in Punjab this season, reflecting the severity of the current weather pattern. According to meteorological reports, temperatures in several parts of the state have dipped below 5 degrees Celsius, creating hazardous conditions, particularly for young children commuting to school.

The decision was formally communicated through official channels, with state education minister Harjot Singh Bains confirming the closure on social media. The announcement emphasized that the health and safety of both students and school staff remain the primary concern behind this administrative measure.

Impact on Academic Activities

During this extended break, all routine academic sessions and classroom activities will remain suspended. School authorities have been directed to ensure that no educational activities take place on school premises during this period. The government has urged parents to keep children indoors and take necessary precautions against the biting cold.

The situation has become increasingly challenging for families, as dense morning fog has significantly reduced visibility, making travel difficult and unsafe. The combination of freezing temperatures and poor air quality has prompted authorities to err on the side of caution.

Jharkhand Follows Suit with Shorter Closure

In a parallel move, the Jharkhand School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all schools across the state—including government institutions, aided schools, non-government establishments, and minority-run institutions—will remain closed until January 8. While the closure period is shorter than Punjab’s, it reflects the widespread nature of the current cold spell affecting multiple states simultaneously.

State governments across the region are monitoring weather conditions closely and have indicated that further extensions remain possible if the cold wave persists. Several other states have also adjusted school timings or announced staggered openings to mitigate the impact of extreme weather on young learners.

Regional Response to Extreme Weather

The decision to close schools is not limited to these two states alone. Various state administrations are implementing similar measures, either by extending holidays or modifying school schedules to avoid the coldest hours of the day. These proactive steps demonstrate a coordinated approach to safeguarding children’s well-being during one of the most severe winter spells in recent years.

Health experts have welcomed these decisions, noting that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to respiratory issues, hypothermia, and other winter-related ailments, especially among younger children whose immune systems are still developing. The closures also reduce the risk of accidents caused by poor visibility during foggy morning hours.

Parents and guardians are advised to stay updated with official announcements from their respective state education departments regarding any further changes to the school calendar. As weather conditions evolve, authorities remain prepared to adjust their response accordingly, keeping student welfare at the forefront of all decisions.
