Shattila Ekadashi 2026: Date, Rituals, and Spiritual Importance

In the Hindu calendar, each month brings two Ekadashi dates—one during the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and one during the waning moon (Krishna Paksha). These days are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and observing them with devotion is believed to bring great spiritual merit. Among these, the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Magha month holds a special place. Known as Shattila Ekadashi, it is considered more significant than many other Ekadashis due to the prominent role of sesame seeds in its observance.

According to religious beliefs, offering items made from sesame seeds to Lord Vishnu and donating sesame on this day helps cleanse a person’s sins and accumulated negative karma. This practice is said to bestow endless blessings. The fast is also thought to invite the grace of Lakshmi Narayan (the divine couple) and bring happiness, prosperity, and abundance into one’s life. Let us explore the exact date, auspicious timings, step-by-step worship method, and the deeper spiritual meaning of Shattila Ekadashi.

Auspicious Timing for Shattila Ekadashi 2026

Based on the Drik Panchang, the fast of Shattila Ekadashi will be observed on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The Ekadashi tithi begins on January 13, 2026, at 3:17 PM and ends on January 14, 2026, at 5:52 PM. Therefore, the fasting day is January 14. The ritual of breaking the fast, known as Paran, will take place on January 15, 2026, between 7:15 AM and 9:21 AM.

Step-by-Step Worship Method for Shattila Ekadashi

Performing the rituals correctly enhances the spiritual benefits of this fast. Follow these steps for a meaningful observance:

  • Begin at Dawn: Wake up during Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn period considered highly auspicious. Take a bath, preferably in holy water. If a dip in the Ganges is not possible, add a few drops of Ganga water to your bathwater.
  • Offer Prayers to the Sun: After bathing, offer water (Arghya) to the rising sun while meditating on Lord Vishnu. Take a firm resolve (Sankalp) to observe the fast with sincerity.
  • Set Up the Altar: At your worship space, sprinkle Ganga water as a purifying gesture. Offer sandalwood paste, fresh flowers, fruits, incense, a lamp, and sweets to an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu.
  • Recite the Story: During the puja, read or listen to the sacred story of Shattila Ekadashi. This narrative explains the origin and blessings of the fast.
  • Conclude with Aarti: After the story, perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu, singing hymns of praise. Distribute the prasad (blessed food) to family members.
  • Offer Sesame Preparations: Prepare and offer a special dish called Panjiri or Panchamrit using sesame seeds. This is a key offering that fulfills the fast’s purpose.

The Deeper Significance of Shattila Ekadashi

The spiritual importance of Shattila Ekadashi goes beyond mere ritual. It is believed that observing this fast with complete devotion brings the special grace of Lord Vishnu. The practice is said to remove sorrow, poverty, and negativity from a person’s life. By destroying past sins, it paves the way for happiness and material well-being. Ancient religious texts state that the merit earned from this fast ultimately helps the seeker attain Vishnu Lok, the divine abode of the Lord. This makes Shattila Ekadashi a powerful opportunity for both spiritual purification and worldly prosperity.
