India Leads Global Mobile Data Consumption, Poised for Explosive Growth
India has firmly established itself as the world’s most voracious consumer of mobile data, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report. The findings reveal that the average smartphone user in the country now consumes a staggering 37GB of data every month—a figure that is expected to nearly double within the next five years. By 2031, monthly per-device data usage is projected to reach 70GB, cementing India’s position at the top of the global rankings.
This surge is driven by a combination of affordable data plans, widespread smartphone adoption, and an insatiable appetite for video streaming, social media, and online services. As digital habits deepen, the nation’s data consumption patterns are reshaping the telecommunications landscape.
5G Adoption Accelerates at Record Pace
The report highlights a dramatic shift toward next-generation networks. By the end of 2025, India had 430 million 5G users, representing 35 percent of all mobile subscribers. This rapid uptake is expected to continue, with projections indicating that the number of 5G users will surpass 1.1 billion by 2031. At that point, more than 81 out of every 100 mobile users in India will be connected via 5G technology.

The number of 4G users, which stood at 570 million in 2025, is expected to plummet to just 160 million by 2031. This steep decline reflects a massive wave of SIM upgrades as consumers switch to faster, more reliable 5G connections. Global 5G Momentum
India’s 5G boom is part of a larger worldwide trend. As of the first quarter of 2026, global 5G subscriptions had already crossed the 3 billion mark. In that single quarter alone, 162 million new users joined 5G networks across the globe. Looking ahead, the report forecasts that by the end of 2031, worldwide 5G subscriptions will more than double to reach 6.4 billion.
