Snapchat Introduces Major Privacy Update for Teens Under 16

Concerns over the safety of children and teenagers on social media have been a persistent issue worldwide. Several countries have even moved to ban social media access for users under 16. In response, Snapchat has rolled out a significant privacy-focused update specifically designed for users aged 13 to 15. This new feature aims to create a safer, more controlled environment for younger audiences.

What Is the New Friends-Only Profile?

Snapchat has launched a new “Friends-Only Profile” experience for users between the ages of 13 and 15. Under this system, Stories and Spotlight videos posted by these young users will only be visible to people they have personally accepted as friends. This feature is now being deployed globally, marking a major shift in how the platform handles content from younger demographics.

Content Now Limited to Mutual Connections

With this update, teens aged 13 to 15 can still create, save, and display Stories and Spotlight videos on their profiles. However, all of their content will be restricted exclusively to mutual friends—those who have been added and accepted by both parties. Previously, users in this age group could upload videos to Spotlight, but those posts were not linked to their profiles. Now, they will have their own profiles, but their posts will never extend beyond their friend circle.

Why Snapchat Made This Change

Snapchat has stated that the goal of this feature is to allow young users to express their creativity and individuality in a secure environment. The company emphasizes that younger users should share content with their real-life friends rather than seeking public exposure on social media. Under the new system, content will be visible only to friends, not to followers or the broader Snapchat community.

Public Likes and Engagement Metrics Removed

In addition to restricting content visibility, Snapchat will no longer display public engagement metrics for users under 16. This means favorite counts and other public interaction numbers will not appear on their profiles. The intention is to reduce the pressure of social validation and provide a healthier digital experience for younger users.

Age-Based Sharing Rules

Snapchat has implemented a tiered system for content sharing based on user age, as part of its age-appropriate design strategy:

  • Ages 13 to 15: These users will have full access to the friends-only sharing feature, ensuring no outsider can view or interact with their content.
  • Ages 16 to 17: Users in this bracket will have an optional public sharing feature, but it will come with additional safety measures, limited distribution, and enhanced parental visibility tools.
  • Ages 18 and above: Once users turn 18, they will unlock full access to public profiles and broad distribution features.

Existing Safety Measures for Minors

Snapchat has noted that several safety protocols were already in place for users under 18. These include strict default privacy settings, restrictions on contact from strangers, warnings about suspicious accounts, and a moderated public content experience. The new update builds on these existing protections.

How Parents Can Monitor Activity

Snapchat’s Family Center feature provides parents with tools to oversee their children’s online activities. Through this dashboard, parents can:

  • View their child’s friend list
  • Check recent contacts
  • Set content restrictions
  • Disable the My AI chatbot
  • Manage location sharing settings
  • Report suspicious accounts

These controls give families greater visibility and control over how young users interact on the platform, reinforcing Snapchat’s commitment to creating a safer social media environment for minors.
