A Rare Celestial Event: Solar Eclipse on Phalgun Amavasya 2026

The final new moon of the Hindu calendar year, known as Phalgun Amavasya, is set to coincide with a solar eclipse in 2026. This rare alignment has sparked considerable curiosity, particularly regarding whether the eclipse will be visible in India and what spiritual practices are recommended for this significant day. Let’s explore the details of this astronomical event and its cultural importance.

Date and Timing of the Solar Eclipse

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Phalgun Amavasya marks the last day of the waning moon phase in the month of Phalguna. In 2026, this new moon falls on Tuesday, February 17. Because it occurs on a Tuesday, it is also referred to as Bhaumvati Amavasya, a day considered spiritually more potent than regular new moons. This year, the day will also feature the year’s first solar eclipse.

The eclipse is set to begin at 5:26 PM Indian Standard Time and will conclude at 7:57 PM, lasting approximately two and a half hours. It will be an annular solar eclipse, often called a “ring of fire” eclipse, where the moon covers the center of the sun, leaving a bright ring visible along its edges.

Will the Eclipse Be Visible in India?

Unfortunately, this celestial spectacle will not be visible from India. Although the eclipse occurs during the late afternoon and early evening hours, the positions of the sun, moon, and earth mean that the sun will already be below the horizon in India when the event takes place. As a result, people across the country will not be able to observe the eclipse directly. The annular phase will only be visible from specific regions outside of India, primarily over parts of the southern hemisphere.

Spiritual Significance of Bhaumvati Amavasya

Bhaumvati Amavasya holds a special place in Hindu tradition. It is believed that any charitable acts, prayers, or rituals performed on this day yield manifold benefits compared to ordinary new moons. Even though the solar eclipse will not be seen in India, the day itself remains highly auspicious for spiritual observances. Many devotees choose to engage in meditation, fasting, and specific worship practices to harness the positive energies of this unique confluence.

Recommended Rituals for Phalgun Amavasya

For those looking to observe this sacred day, several traditional practices are recommended to invite prosperity, peace, and spiritual growth.

Worship of Lord Shaligram

Begin the day by bathing a Shaligram stone (a fossilized stone considered a form of Lord Vishnu) with milk and pure water. Offer flowers, sandalwood paste, and other puja items. It is believed that consuming a small amount of the water used for the abhishekam can bring positive energy and blessings.

Honoring Goddess Tulsi

Clean the Tulsi (holy basil) plant with fresh water and offer it sandalwood, vermilion, flowers, and a sacred cloth. Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks. Circumambulate the plant 7, 11, or 108 times while chanting the mantra “Om Shri Tulsyai Namah.” This practice is said to attract divine grace and purify the home.

Paying Homage to Ancestors

Amavasya is traditionally dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors (Pitrs). Perform a simple tarpan by offering water from the palm of your hand, letting it flow from the thumb. Additionally, offer ghee and jaggery on a cow dung cake as a form of smoke offering (homa), while remembering your forefathers. This ritual is believed to bring peace to their souls.

Venerating the Peepal Tree

The Peepal tree is considered highly sacred in Hinduism, and worshipping it on Phalgun Amavasya is particularly meritorious. Wake up early and pour a mixture of water, Ganga jal (holy water), raw milk, and sesame seeds at the roots of the tree. Circling the tree and lighting a lamp beneath it is thought to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, bringing wealth and abundance.
