The Sacred Observance of Somvati Amavasya in 2026

In Hindu tradition, the new moon day, or Amavasya, holds profound spiritual significance. When this lunar phase coincides with a Monday, it transforms into Somvati Amavasya, an occasion believed to carry multiplied blessings. This unique alignment is considered exceptionally auspicious for performing rituals dedicated to ancestors, seeking marital harmony, and inviting prosperity into one’s life. The day is marked by sacred baths, charitable acts, and devoted worship, all of which are thought to cleanse the soul and dispel negativity.

Somvati Amavasya is especially revered by married women, who observe a fast to pray for their husband’s longevity and the enduring happiness of their family. The rituals center around the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, whose blessings are sought for a stable and loving marital bond. Additionally, taking a holy dip in a sacred river and offering charity on this day is believed to alleviate ancestral afflictions, known as Pitru Dosha, and infuse one’s life with positive energy. Performing these observances at the correct astrological time is said to yield the most favorable results.

Determining the Date of Somvati Amavasya 2026

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the Amavasya tithi begins on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 5:35 PM and concludes on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 5:31 PM. Since the new moon phase commences before sunset on Monday, this day is recognized as Somvati Amavasya for the purpose of fasting and rituals. Scriptural guidelines state that even a brief presence of the Amavasya tithi on a Monday before sunset qualifies the day for this sacred observance. Therefore, the fast should be observed on February 16. The following day, February 17, will also be an Amavasya, but it will be associated with Tuesday, making it a Bhoumavati Amavasya.

Auspicious Timings for Rituals

The primary fast for Somvati Amavasya in 2026 will be held on Monday, February 16. The most favorable period for performing sacred baths and offering charity, however, falls on the morning of Tuesday, February 17. This specific window is considered exceptionally meritorious. For those seeking to honor their ancestors, the midday period on Tuesday is ideal for performing tarpan (water offerings) and pind daan (rice ball offerings). It is widely believed that bathing in a holy river and donating on this day brings immense spiritual merit and helps pacify ancestral debts.

Complete Ritual Guide for Somvati Amavasya

Observing Somvati Amavasya with sincerity and proper procedure is key to unlocking its full spiritual benefits. The following steps provide a comprehensive guide to the day’s observances.

Morning Preparations and Vow

Begin the day by waking up during the Brahma Muhurta, the auspicious pre-dawn period. Take a cleansing bath and wear fresh, clean clothes. After this, formally take a vow (sankalp) to observe the fast. Verbally state your intention, such as dedicating the fast for your husband’s long life and your family’s well-being. This conscious commitment sets the spiritual tone for the day.

Worship of Shiva and Parvati

If possible, visit a Shiva temple to perform a detailed worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. If visiting a temple is not feasible, you can create a sacred space at home. Place a clean cloth, preferably red or yellow, on a small platform and install an image or idol of Shiva and Parvati. The worship should include the following elements:

  • Offering Sacred Thread: Offer raw cotton thread to the Shivalinga and the idol of Goddess Parvati, either seven or eleven times. Using an odd number is considered auspicious. This act is believed to strengthen love and stability in married life.
  • Ritual Offerings: Pour water, milk, and bilva leaves over the Shivalinga. For Goddess Parvati, offer items associated with adornment, such as vermilion, bangles, and cosmetics.
  • Aarti and Prayer: Conclude the worship with a ceremonial aarti and offer prayers for the peace and happiness of your entire family.

The Significance of the Peepal Tree

Circumambulating the sacred Peepal tree is a highly meritorious act on Somvati Amavasya. After the main worship, perform 108 circumambulations (parikrama) around the tree. While doing so, wrap a thread around the trunk 108 times. As the Peepal tree is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva, offer it water, milk, sandalwood paste, and uncooked rice. This practice is believed to fulfill wishes and bring divine blessings.

Honoring Ancestors Through Charity

The final and crucial part of the observance involves acts of charity to honor one’s ancestors. Donate food, clothing, or money to the needy and to Brahmins. This act of giving is believed to bring peace to the souls of departed family members and secure their blessings. It also helps in mitigating any ancestral karmic afflictions. The combination of fasting, worship, and charity on this day creates a powerful spiritual synergy that promotes overall well-being and familial harmony.
