From Hyperloop Finalist to Space Innovator

In July 2019, all eyes in the aerospace world were fixed on California, where SpaceX was hosting its renowned Hyperloop Pod Competition. Thousands of gifted engineers and researchers from across the globe had gathered to showcase their futuristic transportation concepts. Among them stood a team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras — the only Asian contingent to make it to the finals out of more than 2,500 applicants.

That team carried its ambitions inside a compact pod, a capsule designed to test the limits of high-speed travel. Though the German team ultimately took home the top prize, the Indian squad’s ingenuity and engineering excellence left a lasting impression on none other than Elon Musk himself. The SpaceX founder not only met with the team but also praised their creativity and determination. Leading that charge was a young engineer named Suyash Singh — a name now making headlines across the globe.

Today, Singh is in the spotlight for an entirely different reason. His company, GalaxyEye, has successfully launched the world’s first OptoSAR satellite under its ambitious “Mission Drishti.” This cutting-edge satellite can capture sharp, clear images even through dense clouds, thick smoke, and complete darkness — a breakthrough that promises to transform how we observe our planet.

A Vision Born from Real-World Problems

Suyash Singh hails from Uttar Pradesh and spent his school years moving between institutions in Madhya Pradesh and northern India. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from a private college before pursuing a master’s in aerospace engineering at IIT Madras. His professional journey began at Tata Consultancy Services, where he worked in data analytics, before his interests shifted toward machine vision and deep-tech research. In 2021, he co-founded GalaxyEye alongside like-minded peers.

The Spark Behind OptoSAR

The inspiration for GalaxyEye didn’t come from a corporate boardroom — it came from a natural disaster. In 2018, while studying the devastating wildfires in California, Singh noticed a glaring gap in existing technology. Traditional optical satellites were blinded by thick smoke, while radar systems produced data so complex that everyday users could hardly interpret it. This frustration sparked an idea: what if one satellite could combine the strengths of both?

That idea became OptoSAR, a hybrid sensor that merges optical and radar imaging into a single platform. It’s a first-of-its-kind innovation that makes satellite imagery more accessible and practical for real-world applications — from disaster management to environmental monitoring.

A Leader Shaped by Early Setbacks

Singh’s path to success wasn’t without its share of failure. His first attempt at the Hyperloop Pod Competition ended in disappointment. Rather than giving up, he traveled to the United States at his own expense to study the competition closely, understand what it truly took to win, and rethink his team’s approach. That experience proved pivotal. By 2019, his revamped strategy carried the team all the way to the finals.

What drives Singh is a deep appreciation for the intersection of hardware and software — particularly how complex data, like satellite imagery, can be simplified for everyday use. He believes technology should serve people, not the other way around.

Recognition from the Highest Levels

Singh’s work has not gone unnoticed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally acknowledged Singh and his team during his “Mann Ki Baat” radio program, calling them the young innovators of a New India. For a deep-tech founder, such recognition is rare and significant. Singh is also a compelling speaker who has shared his insights on platforms like TEDx, inspiring the next generation of innovators.

A Memorable Encounter with a Hero

For Singh, meeting Elon Musk remains the highlight of his life. He openly credits Musk as his greatest inspiration, particularly admiring the billionaire’s “first principles” approach to problem-solving and his ability to chase goals that seem impossible. That philosophy clearly echoes in Singh’s own work — building technology that pushes boundaries and challenges conventions.

Building the First Student-Led Hyperloop Team in India

During his time at IIT Madras, Singh founded the “Aavishkar Hyperloop” team in 2017, widely regarded as India’s first student-led hyperloop initiative. His leadership and innovative mindset earned him a spot on Entrepreneur India’s prestigious “35 Under 35” list. He has also been associated with AIESEC, a global youth-led nonprofit active in over 100 countries, further demonstrating his commitment to nurturing young talent.

What Lies Ahead

With the successful launch of the OptoSAR satellite, GalaxyEye has positioned itself at the forefront of space technology. The implications of this breakthrough extend far beyond technical achievement — they open up new possibilities for climate monitoring, disaster response, and even national security. By making high-quality satellite data more accessible, Singh and his team are democratizing information that was once confined to specialists.

From a failed first attempt at a global competition to leading a pioneering space mission, Suyash Singh’s journey is a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of learning from failure. His story reminds us that the most meaningful innovations often emerge from the challenges we face — and the determination to see beyond them.
