India’s Push Toward a Sovereign AI Ecosystem Takes Center Stage at SRCC Conclave

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the annual management conclave ‘Yugantar’ at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), part of the University of Delhi, on Friday. Speaking at the event, he underscored the urgent need for India to build a sovereign artificial intelligence ecosystem to stay competitive on the global stage.

The two-day conclave, themed around AI for sustainability and startup innovation, brought together students, academics, and industry leaders. Professor Yogesh Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, was also present on the occasion, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to fostering forward-looking discourse.

A Shift From AI Consumer to AI Creator

Pradhan noted that India has largely been a consumer of AI technologies developed elsewhere. However, he stressed that the country is now steadily moving toward developing its own sovereign AI capabilities. This transition, he said, is essential not just for technological advancement but for ensuring that India’s digital future remains aligned with its national interests and developmental goals.

He further highlighted that India has taken on the responsibility of representing the Global South in conversations around artificial intelligence. The recent AI summits, he added, are significant steps in that direction, giving emerging economies a stronger voice in shaping global tech policies.

Embracing Change and Innovation

Addressing the young audience, the minister encouraged students to embrace transformation rather than fear it. He called on higher education institutions to break free from the colonial mindset in education that has persisted since the Macaulay era, and instead align themselves with the vision of a developed India. This shift, he argued, requires a fundamental rethinking of how knowledge is imparted and how students are prepared for the future.

Pradhan also spoke about the changing nature of competition in the age of technology. He emphasized that technological self-reliance is no longer optional but a strategic necessity. According to him, India must develop its own AI frameworks, data infrastructure, and innovation pipelines to ensure long-term resilience and leadership.

Celebrating a Century of Excellence at SRCC

During his address, the minister congratulated SRCC on completing 100 years of shaping commerce education in the country. He praised the institution’s legacy of academic excellence and urged students to dream big and draw inspiration from innovation. He described the college’s centenary year as a milestone not just for the institution but for the broader educational landscape of India.

As part of the event, Pradhan also toured the ‘Viksit Bharat Startup Expo 2026’ hosted at the college. The expo showcased innovative prototypes developed by students, reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit and creative problem-solving that the conclave aims to nurture. These student-led projects, the minister noted, are a testament to the kind of homegrown solutions that can drive India’s progress in the years to come.

The conclave serves as a platform for dialogue on how emerging technologies can be harnessed for sustainable development, while also encouraging the next generation of founders and changemakers to contribute to India’s growth story.
